05 equinox breaks grinding

hi folks, i have an 05 equinox and when i brake it sounds like the front breaks are grinding, i bought new pads and went to put them in but the pads were more then half there and even on the inside and outside. the rotors look good to i just dont see any problem there. it doesnt happen all the time but happens just the same. im just wondering if anyone else has came across this problem and whast you did to fix it. thank you

If the pads are ok, and the rotors are ok, the only thing I can think of is the pads may shift slightly and occasionally catch the rust ridge where the edge of the pad has created a ridge in the rotor.....

Only other thing I can think of is the dust shield, may be bent towards the rotor and under the right conditions, makes occasional contact.....

so is this a normal problem? is it a chronic problem with equinox's and will it wreck anything? i just bought this car and have 4 years of payments i have already found the starting problem that seems to plague 05 equinox's that isnt a big deal.just wondering how many more things i will find

It could be just cheap brake pads causing the noise, or brake dust in the rear drums. We have a '05 also, bought it used and had bad brake noises also. The previous owner installed Autozone specials on it. I replaced them with OEM parts and have had no noises since.

One thing I forgot to ask.....

Does this noise occur, first thing in the morning, with initial braking, and then clears up after application of the brakes several times? If this is the situation, I have seen ceramics do this....kind of normal for them....

Tech II thanks for the info, it's really hit and miss it will happen then wont then will again. I bought the mid level pads and am thinking of throwing them in to see if it helps out any. It's more of an annoyance then anything else.
