Oil burning problem cured........ possibly.

Well I think I have my oil burning issue with my 08 Silverado 5.3 L cured,fingers are crossed.This past winter I had the left side valve pan changed as per the recommendation of a mechanic at the dealer I bought the truck from.It slowed the oil use down dramatically but didn't stop it and about 2 months ago it was due for an oil change so I bought a bottle of Amsoil engine flush to go along with the oil.The flush goes into the old oil before you change it and is run through the system for about 15 minutes then drained.It's supposed to get rid of carbon buildup etc and from what I can tell that is one of the causes of the oil consumption in these engines,info I learned from jcat in a previous post.
It has been a little over 2000kms since I changed the oil and I have yet to see any reduction in the amount of oil in the crankcase.I have read that it's "normal" for these engines to burn about a litre between changes,well I'm no mechanic or engineer but why would it be normal to burn oil in an otherwise healthy engine unless the valve seals or rings were weak? I've been around and worked on all types of engines most of my life and if it's considered normal to burn oil then it's a piss poor design.
I'll be keeping a close eye on the oil to make sure but I'm hoping the consumption issue is fixed,in my case at least,but if anyone else is experiencing abnormal oil use and smoking out the tail pipe I would recommend the valvepan change and at you next oil change interval try the Amsoil engine flush or a similar product if you don't use Amsoil.It seems to have worked for me.

you are using dexos GM approved engine oil correct ? I just purchased late last year mobil 1 synthetic 5-30wt and this is now dexos GM rated.

I must say this dexos blend does work quite good in the 2000 5.3L engine. much less piston slap when it was very cold out for a minute or so . with the warmer temps now no slap when cold start , so this has some kind of additive in it.

I just did a 1000MI run to Maryland and back . 18.5 MPG hyway/city complete .

plus 1.5 hrs in traffic on way back ...

ANd goodness of it is, you can drive on it all you want to. I usually do for 500 miles or so, then change oil. THAT will put it into ANY area where carbon buildup is.

Don't know as I intended for this to be a marketing thread for Amsoil it's just what I have easy access to is all.

I had a 2009 Silverado with an oil burning problem. Only 50,000 miles and I was using 3 quarts between changes. I also was getting a number 7 misfire and an occasional puff of white smoke out of the tailpipe at start-up. Returned to dealer and under warrenty they replaced several pistons, valve covers and seals.

your description of the work performed is IMO a dealership half azz job. post back if it worked out. with 3 qts I would guess this will take about 1 week to figure out if they did fix it...

How can that be normal, my 2000 Silverado with 264,000+ miles on it never uses oil in between oil changes. From what I read on the forums these 2007-2013 trucks are junk! I would never want one of those AFM engines. Just my opinion.
