I am looking to buy a dodge 2500 diesel truck. My main purpose is for farm use but at the same time be able to drive it out and about on medium size trips. I was wondering if it is better to purchase a truck with a automatic transmission or a manual trans.? What's the advantage or disadvantages to bit of them?

It's a personal preference. It was hard getting my '92 out of 4x4 with the auto. trans in drive at a stop. My current '01 w/6spd. has no in-out issues since I just have to push the clutch in to help get it in or out of 4x4.
Avoid the 5 speed manuals, 5th gear nut issues.
What year truck are you considering?

I was talking to guys around here and they were saying to get one between 2001-2003, I'm not sure what the reasoning was behind it though. Did they ever switch tran. At any point in time?

Mine has classic issues for '94-'02 Dodges...lift pump, injector pump troubles.
A friend bought an '05 new and recently had to have the in-tank fuel replaced. That's it, no other issues.
No injector pump, lift pump, #53 engine block, 5th gear nut/no 5 spd. manual trans issues, only 6 spd., good auto. trans. stock.
That would be my preference if I was in the market
