The sunroof opened with the switch but will not close. Replacement is out of the question. Has any one successfully closed a sun roof? Dealer tried but could not. another repairman suggested breaking the arms and sealing it shut.

Don't know anything about them, but if it was mine, I'd call or take it to one of those places that installs them, they'd know how to go about it.

If that wasn't an option, I'd pull the headliner and fix it myself, or try shooting power directly to the motor from the switch terminals...

Yeah. the dealer couldn't fix it. I talked to a another mechanic who suggested that we take the glass off, break rail parts so that the glass would lay down and screw the glass back on. We did this tonight successfully, as long as you don't want a sun roof that opens. I'm not perfectly happy, but the car is drive-able in all weather now.

Yeah, GM misses the boat on their sunroofs.....whether it's a motor or switch you are out of luck.....my wife's old Nissan was motorized, but it had an opening where you could insert a manual crank in case of motor failure....

Mine stuck up on the right side. What happens is the guides are plastic and break. I unscrewed the glass and worked the sliders down and screwed the glass back on. Because I wanted a sunroof, I went to the Sunroof Doctor. They remake the guides in aluminum and a return kit for around $125. I decided to get the whole using for about $395 minus $100 core. They send you the box you replace your sunroof and send the old one back. I was very satisfied.Still have the car. Its easier to replace the ntire unit than use their kit after talking to them.

It's not hard to change the whole thing out. The headliner panel is a pain but really not too bad.

+1 on that. The Lumina/Monte sunroof cam slides are a weak point. Since almost no one EVER properly cleans and lubes the body parts/hinges/seals - Including dealership service departments - these tend to get neglected. It's amazing the plastic lasts as long as it does under those conditions. The aluminum parts may last longer, but will eventually gall and pit, and ultimately fail, with the same kind of neglect.
