Problems with Clutch

Hello,

I am having a problem with this 1998 A4. It is manual, and when you put it gear, it simply doesn't move. No matter how high your rev the engine.

I then found out that without depressing the clutch, you can put it in any gear that you want. So it almost seems that the clutch is somehow magically depressed and remained stuck in that position. I can start the engine, put it in first gear, and take my foot off completely, and nothing happens. It is as if I am still depressing the clutch.

Any ideas/suggestions as to what might be causing this?

First thought: siezed slave cylinder?

That is indeed likely. But would you still be able to freely go into different gears if the slave cylinder is seized?

Sure, if the clutch has the engine disengaged from the transmission. You could change a flat tire while running in 2nd gear! :lol:

Last time I checked, the whole clutch is warrantied for 12K, so you should be covered. Even if you were beyond the 12K limit, I would expect something like the throw out bearing to be covered. Even under abuse, that is not something that should go that quickly. I think what may wear it out faster might be things like keeping the clutch pedal depressed for long periods or making a habit of resting your hand on the shift ****. But none of these should wear out your throw out bearing this soon. Disclaimer: I am not an amateur mechanic and it could be something other than the bearing............

Given the car is 15 years old, any warranty expired over a decade ago.
