2001 F350 Intermittent 4wd

My 2001 F350 looses 4wd after it is turned off. I have it engaged and working, but after I turn the truck off and restart it I'm back to 2wd until I turn the dial a couple of times. I can hear the transfer case engaging. Is it a problem with the auto lock hubs? Thanks.
