I have a 99 eclipse. The linkage went free on it all of a sudden. Another words it has no tension on it. Any suggestions?

We need more information. Auto or manual transmission? Did the linkage come loose from the trans or is the transmission linkage moving but more resistance meaning an internal issue?

Linkage is connected. A friend of mine checked it. It's a manual transmission. My daughter backed of the parking place and then the shifter swung loosely. It happened instantly and not while going down the road.

Check to make sure the actual shifter arms are moving on the transmission. I have had the clips fall off of the shifter cables and the car wouldnt shift. If your lucky thats what happened. Could be on the shifter bracket under the hood or under the console. If you are sure the linkages are moving correctly then you have issues internally and it will have to be taken out and repaired.

It appears one of the cables broke. Is the bracket for the cables under the hood or up in the console?
