Another build from me. This was completed sometime last year and it took me around a month and a half to complete it, mostly during prep and putty.
The model is built straight out of box except for the carpet which I replaced with suede decal and some bare metal works.
Overall the build is straight forward although quite tricky during the painting work because of the body assembly sequence.
First is the engine works. Nothing much done except for the wires provided with the kit.

Interior was painted and detailed with bare metal foil and suede decals.

Is that the 1:8 kit from the 60s? I built a red one back then. The plastic and glue joints dried out after a while and it started falling apart. How is that dealt with these days?

Hi Greg23,
Yes, it is the kit from the 60's. I use Revell Contacta Professional to glue the joints. I pre-planned the assembly so I glue all the parts as much as possible prior to painting. By doing this, the glue will partially melt both surface of the parts and bonds together. It's quite strong and I have not have any of my model kits (some over 15 years of age) having any problems of its parts falling apart.
As for the external parts like the bumper, grille and others, I use the 10 minute set 2-tonne epoxy.

That is simply incredible. I've never had much faith in the 1/8 plastic kit of the E-Type, particularly now that AUTOart are releasing their stunning FHC diecast in 1/18 scale. But there's a truth in that a good big 'un will always beat a good little 'un. Your model is the most realistic looking E-Type I've ever seen. My friend has this kit and I've forwarded him this picture and hopefully, he'll get this kit on the road (and his 1/1 scale V12 roadster - but that's another story and for another forum).
Well done and thanks for sharing! Do you have any more detailed build up pictures?

How did you handle the seams where the lower pan meets the upper body? Did you leave it as seams or fill them before paint?

How did you handle the seams where the lower pan meets the upper body? Did you leave it as seams or fill them before paint?
This is how l do it, I paint and assemble the interior and engine (leaving other small details that can be attached afterwards). Then I glue the parts, putty and sand until it is smooth before masking it and painting it. It's tedious but well worth it.
Test fitting before painting.
http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i108/druid99/Big%20scale%20Monogram%20Jaguar%20XKE/JaguarProg06010.jpg
After a few layers of Tamiya British Racing Green. Notice the seams and gaps are no longer visible and notice the masking that needs to be done prior to painting.

And sharing your techniques is very appreciated. When you polished, did you use the fine grit cloths or liquid car compounds? Or both?? :)

Fantastic job Druid! The paint looks amazing in your photos.
I have another way of painting the body with no seams! I glued the top and bottom body halves together, then cut out the floor (along the line where it meets the door cills). This means you can paint the body without the interior in place. You have to tidy the floor/body edges though and add plastic card to compensate for the lost material during sawing. Thought this may help someone wanting to give it a go!

Beautiful build and thanks for some of the in progress pics. One question though - you said you used Tamiya's British Racing Green. I wonder which one that is, as I found 2 that could be it:
TS 9 British Green
TS 43 Racing Green
found here: http://www.tamiya.com/english/products/list/tamiya_spray/kit85001.htm
I assume you didn't mix those two to actually get BRG? ;)
I'm asking since I'm looking for a good representation for the '67 Le Mans Surtees/Hobbs Lola T70 which ran in a very dark BRG (unlike the fake blue seen on Tamiya's box art).

Beautiful build and thanks for some of the in progress pics. One question though - you said you used Tamiya's British Racing Green. I wonder which one that is, as I found 2 that could be it:
TS 9 British Green
TS 43 Racing Green
found here: http://www.tamiya.com/english/products/list/tamiya_spray/kit85001.htm
I assume you didn't mix those two to actually get BRG? ;)

Hi, thank for the comments. I actually use two types of green to get the colour but I can't remember the code (will get back to you on this tomorrow but it is definitely one of the above:grinyes:) but another is a paint I get from my local hardware store.

Hi
Beautiful build which has inspired my own build!
To get the dark green it is TS-9. The TS-43 is a lighter more bright green used for the Lotus 25.

You are right, I use British Green (TS-9) for the Jaguar. Prior to that, I painted the base with decanted paint from normal spray can, otherwise I will have to buy at least 3 cans of Tamiya paint to cover the whole car (inside and out). I decanted all the paints and spray using airbrush to have better control on the paint.
