I've thought about trying this too. I was basically going to use the OEM Pioneer sub & enclosure from the premium sound system and power it with an aftermarket amp.

The subwoofer and enclosure assembly (GM p/n 10393223 - includes subwoofer and enclosure) are the same from 2006-2009. The sub is 8 inches in diameter. The wiring diagram shows two pair of wires going from the factory amplifier to the subwoofer, so it is dual voice coil too.

(p/n 22727895 on sticker is no longer valid)

There is a sticker on the enclosure that says it is made by Pioneer and 2 ohms. I'm guessing that each voice coil is 2 ohms, but a quick check with a multimeter could determine this. I'd guess it could handle 100 watts RMS per coil at 2 ohms.

The subwoofer appears to be removable, so you may be able to replace it with an aftermarket sub of your choice. Although in the 2010-up Equinox the Pioneer sub is a little different and won't fit, it is about the same size. On their website, Pioneer notes that the 2010+ enclosure is about 15 liters in volume. This is a little more than .5 cubic feet which is sufficient for most aftermarket 8 inch subs.

Just an FYI that the 2006 factory amplifier is different than 2007-2009.

You will also need the right rear body side trim panel that goes over the sub enclosure. These are also the same from 2006-2009.
