Crazy Brake Lights

I have a 2000 Silverado 1500 4X4 extended cab with short box with a 5.3L.

First let me say that I use the truck as a snowplow so it is used in snow salt etc.

A couple weeks ago I noticed that my brake lights were staying on all the time. I removed the fuses for the trailer left and right lights and the brake lights went out. due to the holidays I haven't had time to find out why the lights were staying on.

Today I noticed that my 3rd brake light was staying on all the time, even with the truck off, and no one in the truck, and my electric brake controller inside the cab was on. I unpluged the controller from the fuse panel and the controller light went out but the 3rd brake light was still on. I couldn't find a fuse, so I removed the bulbs. Can anyone please tell me where I would start to find the problem.

Have you checked the brake switch on the brake pedal??

remove the STOP LPS 20A FUSE . if the lights go out then it will be the stop lamp brake pedal switch needs adjustment or replacing.

Don't rule out the brake pedal switch. Most 3rd brake lights run independent of the main brake lights. Those normally route through the steering column/turn stalk system.

there are many fuses. did you remove the one I suggested ?

Brake lights and 3rd brake lights are 2 separate circuits protected by separate fuses. But they both run through the pedal mounted brake light switch. Thats most likely your problem.

the fuse I mentioned for HIM to remove feeds the brake pedal switch [hot at all times]. those other lower amperage fuses are further down the feed line, and lower amperage.

removal of this fuse mentioned should reveal if it is or is not the brake pedal switch.

the feed to the brake pedal switch does feed the rear brake lights as well as the high mounted brake light.
