I picked this kit up 2nd hand at a model show for a real bargain of £8. It hadn't been built but the roll hoop was broken with a little piece missing and one rear shocker missing. No real problems to overcome.

I've always wanted to build this into a rally car for my collection and hopefully I could pick up the necessary parts. I got the Renaissance transkit and hopefully a set of Didier Auriol - Panache Tour de Corse decals will be on their way.

The wheels are not exact for this version as they are split rims but they will suffice and are pretty good for resin wheels, needing only a reasonable tidy up. Tamiya kit tyres fit the rims which is great news.

http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t318/Kaj015/DSC_0099.jpg

As the kit is a touring car the suspension ride height is too low for the rally car version.

I will adjust this as follows - the rear discs will be mounted further down on the 'stub axle'. At the front this was going to be more tricky until a pair of Celica safari front struts came to the rescue. Nearly perfect ride height and only need minor tweaking to move the 'steering rack' attachment.

Ohhhh!! Will follow that closely since I got one to build too in the panache livery...

Nice start and good thinking on the front strut!!

The transkit includes a small infill for the front bumper which will require minor filling.

The rally car has a different bumper which has narrower lower cutouts so these were filled to bring them in and of course the lower lip from the touring car has to be removed.
http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t318/Kaj015/DSC_0102.jpg

The existing touring car fuel tank needs to be removed and replaced with the resin one supplied in the transkit. Old credit and phone cards come in very handy.
http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t318/Kaj015/DSC_0110.jpg

A bulkhead was made which sits just in front of the fuel tank.

http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t318/Kaj015/DSC_0111.jpg

The cage in the kit is only a rear hoop affair and has been modified to reflect the rally car with a rear diagonal and forward section with lower door bars.

Evergreen 0.080" rod does the job perfectly!

More photos to come. . .

The lower fuel tank has been removed. Detail photos of the real car are difficult to find so I've just got to use a bit of 'artistic licence'.

A front sump guard is made. From any photos I can find this was a Dural guard at this time and not composite.

I have made a small surround out of thin plastic card for the fuel filler and also added a small open roof vent.

Does anyone have any photos of the interior of this car? From the Youtube in-car videos it looks to be black with the dark grey door cards but photos of a similar Autoart 1/18 scale built model has silver floor pan? I'm also trying to find where the battery was positioned ( in the LH boot area next to the spare wheel?). Any help would be appreciated so that I can paint the interior tub.

As an expert doing Gr.A Sierra conversions :smokin:, you need complete the rollcage with another bar crossing from right to left close to the floor.

This picture is from one of my Sierra projects:

Another question looking to your rollcage is: how are you going to manage the assembly of the dashboard?.

Interesting to see what solution will you use.

I have slotted the dashboard to fit in. It look fine and the cage follows the 'A' pillar pretty good. Do you have any other photos?

Hi,

I don't know if it is helpful and you probably already checked this, but in case you missed it

If you can wait, I have in my hard disk at home an article about the Sierra Panach version versus BMW M3 Gr.A with some pictures of the interior. I think maybe they will solve your doubts about the proper interior colour

Here is the dash in place. I think the grey colour might be a little light?

I don't have any pics just here under my hands but what I can tell for sure is that Auriol's 88 TdC panach Sierra (not 87 :) ) was part of the GB team RED and RED sierras have black inside ! (from under roof to floor)
The battery is, if I'm not wrong, in the left corner of the boot beside spare wheel...

A little progress with the interior of the Sierra. The door panels on the original kit are very plain so I added some more depth to them with plastic card. A navigators footrest has also been added and some more lower bars of the rollcage.

I now have the decal set but the green is so dark it is almost black. I might mask and paint the dark green but I will need to get some paint made up. Are Zero base coats Acrylic paint?

Correct color for 88 Panach' Sierra is "olive" green, a good match is Humbrol #3 pot (unfortunately not released anymore).
I don't know for a can paint or airbrushing... But it should be possible to find match in car center paint range.

I found an old 1988 copy of Rally Car magazine in my loft and this Sierra is featured in it. These were 2 new lightweight shells built by Boreham.
http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t318/Kaj015/DSC_0238_zpsd5ca1af9.jpg
Auriol put the car off the road damaging the rear suspension. Ford brought in 4 mechanics by helicopter and they replaced the damaged parts and got him going in under 15 mins! Of course he went on to win the rally. Don't think they would get away with that nowadays!

I'm happy with the ride height now, the wheels are fixed in position and fiddly wheelnuts added as they are missing from the Renaissance wheels (very annoying).

Some further progression with Panach Sierra. Bodyshell is painted and decals nearly complete and next stage will be Zero 2K clearcoat. I'm not impressed with these Museam Collection decals. The main green front, sills, wheelarches, main big stripe and rear were all masked and painted. The paint match with the decals is spot on. Automotive basecoat was airbrushed. I've read about the 2 stage outer skin removal but an attempt at this on the roof number panel was nearly disaster. Also some of decals want to break up on application and the red stripe on the rear bumper will be done using another plain red decal sht. Give me Cartograf any day.

Happy with the ride height now - seen here with a spare bodyshell.

http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t318/Kaj015/DSC_0031-1_zps704db910.jpg

There are a few inaccuracies with the decals - the Panach decals are little large from the photos of the real car. The black tape holding down the door number panels was missing and these have been added. There was no electrics/extinguisher decals for the bonnet and these have been added.
Apologies for these photos. My DSLR and indoor flash doesn't seem to do the trick. Fed up working in artificial poor light!

Blue colour of the rear lines looks very clear respect real car. Maybe would be better to paint it ina darker colour.

Also why that different blue colour between front and rear Ford Logos? Are they coming from different decal sheets? Rear one is really very light...

Yes, the rear quarter Ford logo is a bit too light and another deficiency of the Museam Collection decal sht. The front wing Ford logo supplied on the sht is far too small therefore these ones are from a Tamiya sht. It's not just so noticeable in daylight as the flash shows it up more, but it will have to suffice for this build.

I wouldn't rush out to buy another set of Museam Collection decals.

What a pitty! I had a better concept of Museum Collection decals.

Only thing I can say is that looks to be a common problem. For my Sierra Marlboro Gr.A TDC 87 I needed to use both Reji and DMC decals, and was not enough as I made my own plates and rally plates.

Same in the case of my nowadays project, Sierra Gr.A TDC 88 Sainz version. I took MFZ decals (little desaster, logo decals in general are bigger, white logos become transparent so you see what is behind, some Michelin and Ford logos are not included, car plates are for 1:18 scale, so you need made your own decals, GB plate is not included, and more...), completed with DMC decals, and lot of them from rest of other kits...

So, conclusion, never be totally confidence about your decal sheet :sarcasmsign:

Got some update photos on my original thread this time! These Museam Collection decals were a real nightmare. They just wanted to break up and nearly spoiled the build. Still got some items still to add, wipers electrical cutout. I need to add a roof antenna and I'm looking for a suitable base. I have a Sakatsu antenna set but they look too small for what I need here. Any suggestions?
