So i purchased a 96 grand am 2.4l awhile back replaced the transmission and have been using it for about 6 months until it died on the highway a little while back, i got on accelerated it wouldnt go above 60 which is rare and then the check engine light came on and i got off the highway, and the car stalled and died when i got to a traffic light on the off ramp. Since then i have replaced the fuel pump which was bad, the sparkplugs, the control module controlling the plugs, the camshaft sensor, the crankshaft sensor, and even the computer to no avail. I really dont know where to go from here, the engine does have compression so it isnt a gasket or a cracked block but im truly stuped any help would be great. Thanks

Start by pulling codes, thing that should have been done before you replaced the computer. If you did replaced the computer and it wasn't at the dealer, there is an high chance that it will NOT work: the computers ask the other computers for the vehicle serial number. if there is a mismatch it will fail to start. GM claim it's a double security feature (anti-theif and to be sure that the computer is programmed with the right car options, a mismatch could be a safety risk). but it's more of a way to lock out the repair from their competitors...

Now, Do you have fuel pressure?
You said you have compression, is it simmilar on all cylinders?
Do you have sparks? On all coils?
If you do, does the injectors open? Anti-theif protection (like passlick) cut the injectors.

If you do have pressure, compression simmilar on all, do have sparks, and the injectors does open, it could be a timing issue

thanks we'll look into the computer part and check that out, we know it isnt a timing issue as well we checked the chain and its fine, we also changed the fuel pressure regulator so i would assume fuel pressure is good, compression is the same around 150 on all cylinders, how can we test if the injectors are opening?

Seem to be missing something here.....

What is the car doing now? It cranks over but doesn't start?

Do you know if you have spark on all four cylinders?

If yes, spray carb cleaner into the intake and see if the vehicle starts......

you may have to do a relearn procedure to match the instrument cluster (where the anti theft is located) to the PCM. it can be done with a scan tool or the 10 minute X 3 (30 minutes) relearn procedure. the theft light will flash on and off if this needs to be done. search online for a procedure.

yes excatly it turns but doesnt start, there is a spark on all four cylinders however when we checked them again three of the four were dirty and one looked brand new (they were all purchased a week ago)

ill try the carb cleaner soon

the fuel regulator is not what make the pressure, it's what limit the pressure by returning the excess fuel to the tank. i.e. when the pressure is too high, it open up, causing the fuel to return to the tank, causing a pressure drop (due to the return)

if 3 out of 4 plugs are dirty... it can mean 2 things: one cylinder do not fire or 3 cylinders have issues.

Try the carb cleaner trick...

As to how to check for the injector, you might be able to try with a test light. it won't tell you if the injector actually open up, but will tell you if they get commanded to open or not...
