My 2002 monte carlo ss lost power so brought it into the garage and they changed the catalytic converter. but then engine light came on, so after several months of bringing it back to the garage they have changed the catalytic converter 4 times, the resister pipe, several sensors, the battery and now the thermostat and the light just keeps coming on, it ended up costing us twice as much and still the light remains on, the garage has no clue what to try next anyone else come across this,

the owner of the garage never told me, but did say that it would only be harder on gas, well with the price of gas i hope it won't be too bad on gas because the bill is now double and i am giving up trying to get the light off because it comes right back on after you drive it home,

Something should tell you, when you replace a cat four times, and when the garage/shop does not write down the code on the repair order for the customer, that these guys are either incompetent or are in over their heads.......
Sorry, but you need to go to someone else....this is not brain surgery....it's a check engine light for crying out loud....

because he is scanning it and not charging me for the scan he hasn't given me the code, from what i overheard him saying to his mechanics they are checking on numbers, all I was told is that it won't hurt anything but will be harder on gas it has something to do with the fuel, he now has told us he has asked around and has done all he can do so now I am out $1400 and have to find another garage because I won't bring it back to the dealer had too many bad experiences there,

Do you have an Autozone, Advanced Auto nearby? They will read the codes, ask them for the numbers.

Is it possible to ask them what the code is, and EXACTLY, step by step, the work that was done on the vehicle? Your repair records should shed some light on this.....like I said, a professional shop writes an RO like this:
1. What is the customer's complaint? The shop checks and VERIFIES the complaint.....
2. Vehicle is diagnosed, and what is needed for the repair...
3. the repair is made.....
4. the vehicle is road tested and checked out that everything is ok, BEFORE the vehicle is returned to the customer....if a code was set, it is cleared, and road tested so that the flag for that code has run and passed....
