If i understand you correctly, a lot of the members here with an airbrush will use alclad chrome as the best alternative to actual chrome plating.
I'm not too fond of the chrome look, so I find Tamiya TS-31 to be a great alternative.

Lately, I've been using Duplicolor's Chrome Paint. Works well as long as you used a primer under it (it says it's an enamel, but my Styrene exhaust said different). Another idea for non complex (ie: smooth) surfaces is Bare Metal Foil. HTH

Heard great things about Alclad II but I have't used it yet. I'm currently using Gunze's Mr. Metal for my chroming and aluminum needs. So far so good. I'm pretty satisfied. :D

I use Duplicolor Metalcast Chrome paint, but you need primer cos the paint hurt the plastic.
