Car recommendation request

Hi all!
I'm from Argentina and because of work I'm going to be relocated in the USA the next month.
As soon as I arrive I have to buy a family car and I'm struggling to find out which one suits well for me because all the cars are quite different from what I know from here.
I would certainly appreciate, if it is not too much to ask, if you could advice me what kind of car I should be looking for.

We have a priority list:
- Safe (not a dead trap)
- Reliable (break not too often)
- Easy to repair
- 4 doors
- Low gas consumption
- Space for groceries and luggage (not a polar bear but 4 big suitcases)
- Air Conditioning, power steering (my wife will drive it as well) and alarm.
- Manual if it is cheaper

Luxury is out of our list.
We don't need to show or wealth (we are far from wealth) to anybody, so we don't care how much interesting the car looks provided its aspect shows dignity, we only care about the functional part and the economy part.

We have a budget of 10K to ideally under 14K, but we can go up to 18k if we cannot get close to match our priority list.

In Argentina we were about to buy this one (which the base model cost around 17k new):

While trying to find a similar one we found the Jetta Sportwagen but unfortunately it is out of our budget as new ... and as well it might be too big.

I don't mind buying a certified used one if you recommend that. Actually this is the key of the question, it is what I would like to do, but there are lots of reviews and data of new cars but I couldn't find rich information about used ones. As well in my country new cars tend to be more expensive in the day by day use (more expensive services, taxes and insurance) while a 2 years old car seems to be optimum in what you get for the money.

My question is not about what is the absolutely best, I don't care to fail buying one 1k more expensive than other that would have been the same, or one without an extra detail that other car had ... what I am afraid is about failing on buying a car that will be a problem in my life, this is what I want to avoid at all cost. If the car breaks to often, If I cannot travel with all the family once per month or if I cannot adjust the budget to the gas consumption and services costs I will be in troubles.

Thanks in advance!
