Toyota Supra JZA80 (commissioned build)

Last week a girlfriend of my asked me to build her boyfriend's car. (which is also a friend of my).

I said yes, cause he drives a very very cool Toyota Supra JZA80 with 700bhp. He imported it from the UK a while ago.

Here are some pics:

Last weekend I bought the Tamiya Toyota Supra Castrol which was the best base I think. The bodykit is pretty much the same (sideskirts and wheelarches). It hasn't got on engine but if I combine the normal street Supra and this kit, the project will be too expensive. So this was the best I think. The Castrol wheels are also pretty close to the real wheels, which is good cause I don't have anything else that look the same.

http://modelbrouwers.nl/media/albums/245/6835/inhoud%20(3)%20(Custom).jpg

The bodykit needs a lot of work, so I started with the hood. First I filled up every airintake that I don't need. Then I started on the big airintake in the center of the hood. I used the kit supplied airintake, but I didn't used the whole part, cause I need the other half for the smaller intakes that I still need to make.

http://modelbrouwers.nl/media/albums/245/6835/ruwbouw%20(5)%20(Custom).jpg

Meanwhile I'll continue on the hood cause it needs a lot of work. And in my mind I'll try to find a solution to modify the frontbumper.

Meanwhile I got a little further with this project:

First I cutted out the other two smaller intakes and puttied everything again. I also filled up the old intakes in the frontbumper. I used Tamiya Epoxy putty for that cause it will be rock hard.

http://modelbrouwers.nl/media/albums/245/6835/bodywork%20(4)%20(Custom).jpg

http://modelbrouwers.nl/media/albums/245/6835/bodywork%20(3)%20(Custom).jpg

When the epoxy putty was fully dry, I could sand it smooth and measure the new intakes and drill/cut them in shape. I finished 1 side first.

http://modelbrouwers.nl/media/albums/245/6835/bodywork%20(1)%20(Custom).jpg

Yesterday I did the other side of the frontbumper. It's hard to get it the same as the other side, but I think I managed it.
I also started to cut the other intakes. Between the putty layers I sprayed some primer to see the results so far, but I got some ghostmarks every time were I puttied. I think I need some spray filler to get it right?

That's work like I love !!
This build show us that you're as much skilled to convert a model as you are to paint it !!
What kind of car is the real one, a drift car...? That's a great yellow beast !!

Thanks Phil. I think it's more a time attack racer but I am not sure about that. He plans to do time attack races when everything works again.

I also want to ask you.if it's possible to help me with the licenseplates again.

Of course, if I can help I will do the license plates. Do you still have my email to send me the expected plates sizes ?

OK, seem more logical to be a time attack racer even if it would also be a killer in drift races. :icon16:

Today I had a lot of time for this project reserved.

While I was very busy with the body, the mailman arrived and got my package fron Denmark. Thanks Mads for the dashboard and midconsole!!! I immidiatelly glued the rollcage together and modified the dashboard to fitt in the rollcage.

http://modelbrouwers.nl/media/albums/245/6835/primer%20(3)%20(Custom).jpg

Then I got further with the bodywork. I sprayed a layer of filler on the body, and some inperfections showed up. So it means more putty and sanding.... :D

http://modelbrouwers.nl/media/albums/245/6835/primer%20(4)%20(Custom).jpg

http://modelbrouwers.nl/media/albums/245/6835/primer%20(5)%20(Custom).jpg

And with the final layer of filler it was smooth enough for me.

http://modelbrouwers.nl/media/albums/245/6835/primer%20(8)%20(Custom).jpg

Now it was time to add some Zero Primer on it.

http://modelbrouwers.nl/media/albums/245/6835/primer%20(12)%20(Custom).jpg

I also primered the wheels and painted them Jet Black when they were dry.

Next on the list is paint the body in yellow :D

old school body mods.
don't see much of that these days with resin trans-kits being so popular.

Yesterday I painted the body in Fayence Yellow. But it was not the right color. So I had to paint it with an other yellow. I found a used spraycan in my hobbyroom but it was not enough to spray, only when I spray it with an airbrush. So I need to decant the paint. Here's a little how to:

http://modelbrouwers.nl/media/albums/245/6835/geel%20(1)%20(Custom).jpg

Be sure the plastic foil is tight on the bottle:

http://modelbrouwers.nl/media/albums/245/6835/geel%20(2)%20(Custom).jpg

Then I cutted a pipet to fit on the spraytip.

http://modelbrouwers.nl/media/albums/245/6835/geel%20(3)%20(Custom).jpg

http://modelbrouwers.nl/media/albums/245/6835/geel%20(4)%20(Custom).jpg

And spray in the bottle:

http://modelbrouwers.nl/media/albums/245/6835/geel%20(5)%20(Custom).jpg

And then let the paint gas out for at least an hour.

http://modelbrouwers.nl/media/albums/245/6835/geel%20(6)%20(Custom).jpg

Now the yellow was still not good enough. I only had a bottle of Revell 12 Yellow and Tamiya Flat Yellow. I decided to go for Flat Yellow.

http://modelbrouwers.nl/media/albums/245/6835/geel%20(8)%20(Custom).jpg

http://modelbrouwers.nl/media/albums/245/6835/geel%20(9)%20(Custom).jpg

Tomorrow I'll clearcoat it.

Last week I polished the body. There were a few dust spots in the paint that I sanded away. After some different polishing compounds the body is shining again.

Now I masked of the body to paint the lights and window rubbers.

After I removed the tape I need to do some touch ups and I could add the lights.

I also added black mesh on the air intakes.

So far it looks better than the real one!

Are you going for an exact replica? I am asking because I noticed that your front bumper is not damaged and that the wing attachment on the trunk is different.

No it won't be an exact replica. The interior and chassis will be build box stock and the body must be the eye catcher. I know about the wing attachment, but the wing I use is a bit different. The damage on the frontbumper is already fixed on the real Supra :)

Last week I spent some time on the chassis. I did some cutting before it fitts, cause it stucks to the new airintake in the hood. Then I could paint it and assemble it.

I added some cigarettesfoil on the exhaust area and painted the exhaust with a metalizer paint and polished it. The exhaust tip is made of aluminiumtube and polished.

I also added an intercooler so it will be visible behind the bumper.

The interior is also finished. I kept it simple, but I used the standard Supra midconsole and dashboard that Mads sent me. (Thanks again mate!!)

The seats and dashboard are painted with Tenco Proto structure paint.

I just forgot to add the bonnetpins, side indicators and the rear towel hook so I had to get to the modellingroom and add them to the model. The bonnetpins are from Scaleproduction, the indicator lights are from a left over kit, and the towelhook is scratchbuild.
