How to disable ignition for crank test?

When I was a mechanic in the 1980's it was easy to disable a car's ignition to do starter crank or compression tests, just pull the distributor lead wire in the center of the dist. cap.

I have a 2000 vintage 4.6 engine and was wondering the easy way to knock out the ignition to do crank tests, etc. This engine has all the modules resting independently on each spark plug, so no central distributor cap to get to. Is there an easy way, and does it work for Chrysler and GM cars too?

Thanks.

Pull out the fuel pump fuse or relay.

The spark stays and the engine will crank but not run

Hold the throttle wide open. This shuts the fuel off and you can crank the engine without it starting.

There was some stuff on the internet mentioning to go after the fuel source, like you guys mentioned. Eventually I may have to do tests down the road and I appreciate you guys letting me know on how to do it. The cars now are a different animal from the vehicles of 1972.
