Squealing Belt

This is a simple question with a simple answer I'm sure.

I have a squealy belt on my 2001 Elantra. It's worse in cold. The belt has been replaced, so I assume it just needs to be tightened.

I just don't know how to tighten it. All I can find online are sites that want me to pay for manuals. If someone would be so kind just to point out to me what I have to do to tighten the darn thing I'd be forever grateful.

unfortunately the drive belt cannot be adjusted for they are spring loaded tensioners. if the belt is loose your belt is either the wrong size or the tensioner pulley assembly needs replaced. not just the pulley the whole tensioner. if the belt is brand new that is. you can also buy belt conditioner for it to stop the noise if it isnt loose. some cheap belts naturally squeak. you may want to get a cross hatch belt for it this will ensure the stop of any noise associated with the belt. that can be bought for just a few dollars more. but first check the tensioner assembly for looseness or side to side play. the image below shows the tensioner location.

On you're Elantra, you have 3 belts. Which belt was replaced? And are you sure it's the same belt that is now making noise? There is no spring loaded tensioner on your car. Each belt can be tightened, but I need to know which one.

Well, I'm going to come clean here; the Elantra is actually my friend's car, not mine. I was going by what I had been told re: belt replacement.

Upon actual investigation in person, it would seem as if NONE of the three belts was actually replaced. According to the person who was supposed to have done so, when I prompted more specifics regarding which one, I got "oh, wait... I think it was actually the OTHER car I put a new belt on."

At this point I believe it is probably the Alternator belt. It seems to have a bit more play than the other two. I'll try replacing it first, especially since it appears to also be the easiest.

i have an 02 Elantra with 2.0 engine you certainly can adjust the alternator tensioner you'll have to loosen the bottom bolt the pivot bolt just a little bit so you can movie alternator then on top of the alternator you have a tensioner bolt with a set screw on the side of it loosen set screw adjust belt tension tighten set screw tighten pivot bolt on bottom make sure when you do that you try to turn the alternator by hand if it won't turn that's why your belt squealing it runs water pump off same belt the alternators fail dramatically locking up taking belt with it hope this helps you ,mc
