Lighting problem

Hi I have a 2000 Mazda protege , and since I bought it it's had no low beams . My sisters boyfriend took a look at it for me and it turned out that the harness on the drivers side headlight had shorted out or something along those lines and melted . He cut the harness off and direct wired the lights . Now my Low beams are gone once again ... I was wondering what would be the fix for this am I was looking at an hid kit , would these possibly by-pass te problem ?
