87 cutlass supreme two questions

First the car has a 72 olds 455 in it. There is no ac in the car but I have been told a regular compressor from this years make and model will bolt right onto this motor. So anybodys best guess as to what this would cost to get the AC running?

My other question is - This car has a nice exhaust setup but I was thinking about having the cats removed to give it a little meaner sound to it. Would this cause any problems with the car? I know later model vehicles it will throw a check egine light? Any worries with this on an 87 cutlass?

We cannot advise removing Federally required equipment, that is up to you. With the proper brackets and pulleys it will bolt up.

If you think you are just going to hook up a compressor and add freon, think twice......should use an R134a, as opposed to the original R-12 compressor....need to do a conversion on the valves....replace the accumulator and orifice tube......pray that the system has been sealed all this time, and that there isn't a leak somewhere......

This is an OBDI system, so there is no O2 sensor after the cat to set a code.....but as we said, if you go gor inspection, it is illegal....

Given the car has a '72 455, a very large number of emissions -controls are already removed. So the car is already "illegal".

However, since this is Oaklahoma, where there is no emissions check, no one's going to know if you remove the cat (s). You only have to wrestle with your conscience, as you smog-out the folks down-wind. :)

Seriously, a proper exhaust set up is more complicated than cutting off the cat. Ideally, headers and duals, or a big single exhaust with a low-restriction muffler is ideal, for power with some sound. The last time I looked, there was only one size of header system commonly available for this engine. They will fit in your car, but require some careful fitting and a few mods for clearance.

Plenty of performance mufflers are, imho a bit too loud when run without a cat. There are many decent high-flow cats that will clean the exhaust, decrease sound a bit without restricting flow.
