Oil leak from head gasket?

Here's a question for you. Can a head gasket leak oil down the side of the engine? My 3.1 Monte has a nasty oil leak and I changed my intake gasket and it did not fix it. I saw an engine in the junk yard sitting on the ground and it looked like there were oil drips coming from the head to block interface. I do realize that the oil could have come from the intake and worked its way around the side of the engine along the bottom of the head. When I did my intake, the two bolts that are at each end of the intake towards the firewall were stripped. I was so far into the job that I just skipped it and moved on. I plan on redoing it with heli-coils but was wondering about doing the head gaskets at the same time. There is currently no issues with the vehicle except for the oil leaks. It has 185K on it. I've done the old distributor o-ring and there is no oil cooler. Thanks.
