After an incredibly busy month, I am returning with a new project, the tamiya F1-2000. I decided to add to this beautiful kit the super detail-up kit by Top Studio, the Top Studio antennas and zero-paint matched color. Lots of new stuff for me!

After the work made with the P34, that needed so many adjustments to correctly fit, I was very happy to return back to an all-fits-very-fine kit. However, when I saw the detail up, I thought that this built will not be so plain... It is my first detail-up and I think to need a large amount of help and luck!

In any case, since I have so much to learn, I decided to couple the biult of this kit with that of F2001... two very similar models, and I think that the latter will become the experimentation kit!

Well, some progress. As I said, this is a double WIP... given the similarity between the cars (and the kits), I'll show some progress on the F2001: especially in this phase, the work is almost the same. In this case, I'm adding a PE detail set by Studio27, seems fine!

At first, assembly of the cowl, puttying and sanding. Wings must be removed to add the PE ones. Lots of sanding is therefore needed to guarantee a smooth transition between the cowling and the PE, given its smaller thickness.

http://img820.imageshack.us/img820/6738/f2001sanding01.jpg
http://img26.imageshack.us/img26/4990/f2001sanding04.jpg
http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/3642/f2001sanding08.jpg

Most of the small additional wings must be removed to insert the PE ones.

http://img641.imageshack.us/img641/6999/f2001sanding02.jpg
http://img860.imageshack.us/img860/7148/f2001sanding03.jpg

A beautiful kit but.... ejector-pin-holes everywhere. Those placed in the middle of the rear part of the wing are very visible so... MrHobby liquid putty and sanding. Lots of hours doing this, I hope it worths..

http://img829.imageshack.us/img829/622/f2001sanding05.jpg

Some additional work must be done to properly thin the parts of the diffuser.
http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/8775/f2001sanding07.jpg

At the end... an ensamble view.
http://img594.imageshack.us/img594/8554/f2001sanding06.jpg

Of course, all this work is doubled!

Since I like to make all adjustments to the pieces and test the fitting before the primer-and-paint work, I spent this time mainly sanding, adjusting, studying (the instruction of TS kit... very hard work!), so very few to show.

F2001:

Among other things, I prepared the wheels (with PE rims), with a little help of small PS strips to collectly center them

http://img13.imageshack.us/img13/7153/f2001wheels01.jpg

Then, some work for the seat. It is all prepared to be inserted in the cockpit (so I can make separate paintworks and minimize maskings...), lot of test fittings were needed. I also prepared the roof, to add some realism.

http://img40.imageshack.us/img40/3001/f2001seat01.jpg

However, I've firstly finished preparing all the bodywork pieces, given the long time needed for painting, decaling and curing

http://img515.imageshack.us/img515/5193/f2001primer01.jpg
http://img26.imageshack.us/img26/4923/f2001primer02.jpg
http://img194.imageshack.us/img194/6687/f2001primer03.jpg

http://img831.imageshack.us/img831/7601/f2001primer05.jpg
http://img690.imageshack.us/img690/6081/f2001primer06.jpg

Main adjustments were lot of puttying, all rivets and protrusions removed to guarantee good sanding and polishing, they will be substituted by PE. The false grooves in the headrest (tamy wants to simulate a sort of small pillow, I think...) were puttied and will be substitutes with a real one.

F2000:

similar work on the F2000 (yes, it's a double work....), but less puttying.

http://img687.imageshack.us/img687/9786/f2000primer107.jpg

I think that a lot of difficulties will arise for both cars: as it can be seen from references (thanks daveyman!), in the bottom of the car a smmoth transition can be seen between the red and the black color. Some decals are included in the kit, but I think that the decal red could be different from my ZP red so... airbrush and lot of luck will be my main instruments!

Unfortunately, all the work done for primer was ruined by a wrong white-primer choice: I used a vallejo white primer for airbrush (urethanic)... after a satisfying airbrush session, and after curing, I started sanding , and I discovered that adhesion was quite unsatisfactory. I mean, if you burn through this primer, it peels off instead of being sanded. This is if course an unaccetable risk, if you want a good pantjob! So I decided to strip both primers but....it was very difficult. No solvent was good. I had to use brake fluid to dissolve the tamiya gray primer to peel the white vallejo. Lot of mess and work. But I did, and at the end, I was able to start again with gray primer (two coats and sanding) and white primer (two coats), and after some sanding, I will show some photos later. In the meanwhile, a rear suspension arm simply disappeared. So I decided to scratchbuilt one;
This is the pieces (well.. its brother!). Not so difficult, on overall it is flat and the wing profile is neutral, i.e. symmetrical.
http://img821.imageshack.us/img821/9485/f2001suspensionarm01.jpg

I started gluing some PS strips and sanding to get the overall profile:
http://img831.imageshack.us/img831/8756/f2001suspensionarm02.jpg

Then, I gave the shape by cutting and sanding. The C-shaped part is taken from a PS tube of the right size.
http://img838.imageshack.us/img838/4189/f2001suspensionarm03.jpg

Then some small PS strips and pins were added and shaped by light sanding them. I know, not perfect, but quite satisfactory.

Will be watching this closely. I am building the F2001

booch982

Well, back in action. I decided to change a little bit my way of modelling: since the detail set of the F2000 needs a good preparatio work of the pieces (also the kit...) to reach satisfactory results, and there are so many details to check, I decided to focus on single parts of the car at a time. Today: brakes preparation.

Most of the work was devoted to build the rear hub brakets, since that of the kit were hollow. Since the car will be exposed within the weels (the TS brakes are awesome), some work is needed. This is what I want to obtain:

http://img835.imageshack.us/img835/7646/f2000brakesprep01.jpg

This is the kit piece, with some PS added to close it:
http://img189.imageshack.us/img189/2929/f2000brakesprep02.jpg

Then I added other PS strips, until a shape is obtained:
http://img853.imageshack.us/img853/2650/f2000brakesprep03.jpg

and then sanding, sanding, sanding and so on...
http://img837.imageshack.us/img837/8058/f2000brakesprep04.jpg

This is the final result, I think at least better than the original!
http://img193.imageshack.us/img193/7977/f2000brakesprep05.jpg
http://img849.imageshack.us/img849/3728/f2000brakesprep06.jpg

I prepared also all other brakes-related pieces (drilled holes, checked fittings, sanded and similar), PE included.
http://img256.imageshack.us/img256/7505/f2000brakesprep07.jpg

I can be satisfied: mission accomplished!

The last week was devoted to painjob. I know it took long time for correctly core the paints, so I prefer to work on it befor mechanical works...

I started with TS tamiya pure white by airbrush to the wings (there are some white decals, but I thought it could be fine to make all the work by painting). Then I masked the white parts and gave some coats of red (zero paint, Pre-2004 red). I also painted all the other bodywork pieces. I started with a myst coat, immediately followed by a wet coat, 24h curing, sanding with 1500 grit and another wet coat.
http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/5498/f2000paintjoba01.jpg

After this, I masked the red parts to give two coats of MM classic black. This will work as a base for CF decals in the undertray and is used to simulate heat protection of the bodywork (even if it has a matt finish, I'll use a matt coat at the end...)
http://img14.imageshack.us/img14/9436/f2000paintjoba02.jpg
http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/4391/f2000paintjoba03.jpg

And this is the result...
http://img341.imageshack.us/img341/3668/f2000paintjoba04.jpg
http://img593.imageshack.us/img593/1347/f2000paintjoba05.jpg

The mask in the undertray was removed and the smooth transition from black to red was done by ligthly airbrushing the black paint. The same was done on lateral parts of the bodywork. It is probably not perfect, but I think that it will be possible to sligthly correct the shadowing effect by means of compounds... I'll try. Anyway, better than using a decal with a color probably different from that of the ZP!!

New problems on the paintwork... after color, I decided to try the zero paint 1K clear... what a mess!!! after a couple of mist coats and a wet one (this coat is devoted at protecting the decals, and will be followed by clear coat over decals)... the surface become somewhat wrapped (hope this is correct term...), different from orange peel. And this is the minor problem. Over the white parts, it assumed a yellow/orange tone, so I have to strip yhe paint and start again, at least with white parts. The other will be accurately sanded, but... very long job. have someone had the same problem? Maybe an old bottle?

sorry to hear of the clearcoat problems Booch - it's possible it was the clear - although I've never had clear 1K or 2K ever go bad usually it is the catalyzer in 2K that goes bad - John

booch982
09-25-2012, 05:45 PM
It's the first time for me too. Never had problems with TS13 or X22... the strange thing in this case is that some pieces went yellow, some other had no problems! For the surface, maybe it was my fault...

John18d
09-25-2012, 05:58 PM
Booch - what clear did you use? I've seen 1K clears yellow as they age more so that 2K - I've stored 1K for up to a year and it beginning to yello, but I've stored 2K in its separate components for more that 3 years and it was still usable. The only part I bought new was the 2K "hardener" part - it usually is very stable - when I see "crazing" what looks like in your pictures is usually the "solvents" in the clear or paint reacting with the plastic - which means there was not a sufficient primer coat to protect the plastic - or the solvents reacted with the paint. That's the best I can think of Booch - also are you using all the same company for the paints? I try not to mix and match different brands - Hope this gives you some insight - John

booch982

After all the problems I had with paintwork, I just need to have some progress.... so I decided to decal!

After painting, I gave a TS13 coat, then I sanded with 4000 to 8000 mesh, to have a sufficient finish of the

surface to avoid silvering.

here is the F2000 pieces...

I'll start with F2001, to acquire some experience with CF (It's the first time for me!!). The main body...

My work on the Ferrari's needs some expertise to be gained on CF decals. It' the first time for me, and so the decalwork is actually very very slow. However, I started with some not-so-easy work, i.e. stepped floor (and diffuser..., not shown being incomplete, maybe next post), steering wheel, seat and some suspension arms.

http://imageshack.us/a/img221/6310/paintingandcarbon0105.jpg

http://imageshack.us/a/img689/4858/paintingandcarbon0106.jpg

From the painting side, I gave all the aluminium (TS30 tamiya), then I painted the gearbox with TS42 (light gun metal) and radiators side with ModelMaster chrome... but is very difficult to see on the photos, maybe it will be clearer after some weathering on the radiator grids...

booch982

Thank you! I hope the different metals will come out in some photos, maybe with daylight!

The decal work continues! I finished to CF decal all the pieces of the F2001, in order to gain some experience for the work needed on the F2000. Some of the pieces were covered with different patterns. I also finished decalling the engine spacer and deformable structure.

http://imageshack.us/a/img651/8500/f2001carbon020001.jpg

http://imageshack.us/a/img109/8789/f2001carbon020002.jpg

I can't resist a little temporary assemble (without glue)! I also painted in red some part of the cam covers and I removed the acrylic paint with a wet toothpick to make the ferrari logo came out.

http://imageshack.us/a/img338/808/f2001carbon020003.jpg

http://imageshack.us/a/img534/5645/f2001carbon020004.jpg

Now the carbon fibered parts need some painting: some of the parts need a light coat with clear orange to change the hue (very diluted), then one (or more) light coats with smoke in order to tune down the color, and a light coat with semi-gloss or matt clear.

http://imageshack.us/a/img703/6622/f2001carbon020005.jpg

booch982
11-22-2012, 08:48 AM
The SMS CF decal sheet I bought for the F2000 does not include templates for suspensions, brake parts or other mechanical stuff, but only tamplates for the undertray, wings and seat. And the pattern is not correct in many cases. The templates for the F2001 are self made with some (lot of) patience and some (lot of) meter of masking tape:iceslolan. So, if you're planning to byu some of these template sets, do not expect to avoid to make your own templates....

booch982

This time few photos after lot of work. After finishing the decalwork, I gave a couple of orange clear coats to some suspension arms, and semigloss clear to all carbon parts. The suspension links are colored with vallejo steel or ModelMaster chrome, depending on the part...

The airscope was decalled with different carbon and decals patterns, decalled with the shell logo and then coated with tamiya matt clear. In addition, some BMF. I'm pleased with the result!

Then, suspension link bolts where substituted with TMM rivets, and some PE bolts by topStudio were added here and there... No very detailed work, since all this work will be covered!

The exausts pipes are my first experiment with airbrush: after a first TS30 cost, I cut small stripes of tamiya tape and set them in place where soldering are supposed to be (probably they shoud be thinner...), then some brushing with diluted black near the stripes, and then clear orange, clear blue and very diluted smoke by airbrush, followed by a coat with matt clear. I'm not fully satisfied (any suggestion welcome!!!), but again, these are experiments before making those for the F2000 (that will be shown opened!).

And then... a small temp assembly!

Hi Booch,

Maybe it will be too late too change...But i would like to give you a tip on airbrushing the undertray, If you want to get a smooth transition between your black and red paint! its impossible to reach that result by hand...at least very difficult....Anyway here is my tip! try using a electrical wire along the lip of the undertray and use some tape to make it stick,Lower your pressure a bit and mist your paint along the wire in a straight line (dont spray from above but horizontal) the round edge of the electical wire will give you a smooth transition like the one you try to reach! hope the drawing shows you what i mean

booch982
12-13-2012, 02:27 AM
Thank you mates for your comments!

@thijs37: I know, the transition is very far from perfect, and yours is the secon good suggestion I get to obtain that result. If I only knew! In addition, I already painted this car too many times, it's enaugh for now!:grinyes:

booch982
01-13-2013, 01:23 PM
I was offline, and I was working on the cars' bodyworks (clearcoat, sanding, clearcoat, sanding, etc...) and F2000 carbon decalling, so there was very few things to post. But I decided to stop and make some work on the F2000 mechanics with the TS superdetail kit.

I started with the front brakes reservoirs and steering assembly. It is very difficult to give the wires a realistic appearance, since connectors are very small and the assembly with the wire is very fragile. Moreover, the yellow part is glued in a single point, so... very fragile too! The final result is very nice, I hope you have the same opinion!

http://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/534/f2000frontdetail02.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/534/f2000frontdetail02.jpg/)http://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/600/f2000frontdetail01.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/600/f2000frontdetail01.jpg/)

Then, I worked on the anti-roll bar (the only way I found to correcly assembly is to completely drill with a .30 drill bit one of the attach, fix both attachments and then passing the .30 steel wire). At that point I assembled the whole engine (with all PE, but still without electrical connections). The Ferrari logo on cam comers was subtituted with some PE. Suspension links were simulated with rivets, while other bolts are PE. I also added the links in the exausts (those small parts connecting sinle pipes with the final part) made with .20 copper sheet, and all parts by TS. I enjoied this part of the work very much!

During the clearcoating and decalling with CF, I tound to have the need for some light-working session. So I decided to start some of the scratchbuilding I planned.

I started with the air pillows used in both F2000 and F2001 by MS to stay conofrtable in the car. I tried with some plastic. I cut the correct shapes from a very thin sheet, then I glued the shapes on a second sheet. I worked with my drill in order to give some shapes, and at the end I cut and sanded the whole thing. I painted with some red-yellow, followed by a thin coat of clear red. Not sure if I'm satisfied. Any suggestion is (of course) welcome.

The second work I did is the toolbox used within the ferrari's box. Again, I started with some plastic, in order to make the box. After the faces of the box were prepared, with some strips inside in order to give the box a little more strength, I added some very thin plastic stips in the front face to simulate the drawers. Then some painting and decalling. In addition I realized a tiny notebook with some thin paper, drawing some graphs... absolutely useless, but really funny work!!:naughty:

Last thing to show, I modified the F2000 exausts, adding some red shadows here and there to decrease the difference between the blue and orange zones... some better, but I think that best results should be obtained with the correct color sequence, I think blue-red-orange, all followed by a washing with veri dilute flat black... next time!!

very nice at this moment, please let me do a question.
How do you mark the panels on the top of the monocoque,do you use a scriber?
thanks very much..

Thank you for comments!!!

@Greg23: It's made by melting about 1,243,980 eurocents...:icon16: maybe it costed too much!!

@sebasoakley: all panels are marked with a sciber in the early primer sessions. After the red topcoat, the first learcoat (zero 1K) and decals, I used a very much thinned black acrylic paint. It should go through the lines by simple capillarity... Then I removed the excess with a soft cloth wetted with few alcohol: ready to remove acrylic but not the clear.:2cents:

Finally finished the seats and cockpits. Both were detailed with relevant PE, but I added some other details, just for fun. I scratchbuilt all the lateral dashboards with plastic strips, various PE and turned switches, since the molded ones were very poorly detailed. I added the attachments for the seatbelts (made with a thin metal wire) and the lateral leg protections (two pieces of plastic tubes glued and covered with isolating tape). The PE for the seatbelts are from TS (F2000) and ST27 (F2001), and the former were a nightmare to build!!!

The belts were made with medical silk tape, colored with some color for tissues. The results is quite satisfactory, and colors are available in art stores for few euros and they not crack if the belt is strongly bended. Seams are simulated with white acrilic paint, applied with the head of a needle. Hard to see, but very satisfactory (I know, seams were red in the real car...)

Some advances in the F2000, mainly on the detailing: monocoque almost completed (this is the first assembly session), engine (still without exausts), sidepods and so on. I proceed with this slow sub-assembly procedure to give my epoxy glue the correct time to cure (24h). I think it's the best way to proceed at the end: CA can cause whitening and gives no time for positioning, fast epoxy allows to only assemble a couple of pieces...

Anyway, any comment or question is welcome!

Hi mates, thank you for comments.

This time, very few words as a comment for a lot of work on the F2000: almost finished the engine bay and front suspesions/details.... I added some additional wiring and tubing here and there (according to reerences), the TS details were few :iceslolan:iceslolan.

That's all for the moment!

Still working on the detail of F2000: added wirings, PE and undertray support. I'm actually trying to understand how to correctly glue bargeboards in place...

I added the TS antennas, and detailed the front antenna with a .3mm wire, attached to its support near the brakes reservoirs.

The windshield was carefully sanded and polished to reduce its (embarassing) width.

Finally, the brakes. I think its the most difficult work I ever made. About 40 pieces (PE, resin solder wire pieces) for each assembly (I just want to thank you TS for the number of spare brass-colored PE included!). And difficult masking still needed. But the result is awesome, even if almost invisible to naked eye...

Thank you for reading!

Thank you for all your comments and compliments! (never know exactly what to say after compliments, just happy!)

Ok, the F2001 is almost finished. Only a couple of mirrors & bargeboards away from results. First photo is taken during the micromesh step of the endless paintwork refinement (on overall: gray primer, sanding, white primer, basecoats, clear, polishing until 6000grit, decals, 3 times clearcoat+sanding, polishing, wax). To assemble the front suspension with the nose on, upper and lower triangles as well as steering arm were divided (left and right side). This will probably weaken the suspension, and not still sure it worth the difficulty. Near the end of building, I made some shots. Just for fun. Hope you will appreciate the tiny PE work made on the nose, bodywork and rear wing. The recessed detail in the rear wing plate were highlighted with diluted acrylic black before final clearcoats! However (Murphy's law still valid) an error occured during very final assembly! But I think I can live with this...
