2.4L Engine knocks

2000 Pontiac Grand AM SE 2.4L DOHC 129,000 estimated miles.

After arriving home from the highway, I took notice of a noise coming the engine. Popped the hood just to hear the knocking noise. I had a mechanic from a dealership listen to it. His said it was a lifter or two. Doubtful of what he said, I got a second opinion and this mechanic said it was a rod. So, my question is this, can the rods be replaced without removing the engine?

A lifter can be the issue, they can get loose... and hydraulic lifter could seize up...

I bought a bottle of Gunk Motor Flush. Poured it in and had the engine running for about 5 minutes. Changed the oil with three quarts of synthetic 5w-30 and two bottles of Lucas Oil stabalizer. Didn't quiet down the noise. I did notice some gold particles in the old oil.

A sad truth about gunk remover stuff: it damage engines!

All the gunk and all thats it at the bottom of the oil pan is harmless until something disturb it (gunk remover), where then it circulate in the engine and can block small passages...

Oil stabiliser is also a bad thing... there is ALREADY lots of stuff in the oil. Adding more chemicals can upset the balance and in some case create a chemical reaction due to some incompatibility.

As for the noise, the only way to figure it out is to open the engine...
