i may have posted something similar to this before, but lately ive been starting my car in the morning and it runs extremely rough as if its not getting ebough gas, or maybe too much gas, if i floor the gas it smooths out but i can see tons of smoke coming out of my exhaust. after 20 seconds the idle smooths out and then eventually runs as normal. This only happens when i first start it for the day...all other starts are normal. Any ideas? Ive dealt with this before but forget how i fixed it...HELP:naughty:

Usually the choke pull off is bad causing this.

carb cleaner eats rubber. the choke pull off gets a hole in it [rubber diaphram] then the poor cold start just like you have.

place vacuum on the choke pull off. it should move very fast inward.

when cold start is being done the choke should be closed . as soon as the engine runs this creates vacuum. this vacuum opens up the choke plate to about .170 inches. if this does not occur you get chugging and black smoke.

ok sorry it took so long to repost have been busy with other projects...

im still getting the shitty start ups on first time of the day....

if i hold the choke pull off lever down towards the front of the car it seems to start up fine

with vacuum on it, it doesnt stay in place...what parts need replacing?

The diapragm would need to be replaced, also check the condition of the vacuum hose and make sure there is vacuum at the connection.

sorry where is the diaphragm located? inside the choke stove?

also when i plug the vacuum hose that connects to the choke stove it doesnt hold in place
means theres a leak ? im just confused as to what the vacuum purpose is

The choke stove is on the side of the carb. It does not have a vacuum line attached to it, but it DOES have an electrical connection. It's actually called an 'electric choke heater'; true choke stoves were on the intake manifold with a bimetallic spring that moved a rod to the choke one direction or another depending on the temperature. Last use on a Chevrolet V8 was in 1973, beginning in 1974 the chokes were exhaust heated and in 1980 they were electric.

The part that you called a "choke stove" in another thread, as depicted by your picture with numbers on it, is the diaphragm that I mentioned.
