Ok, heres the deal guys, I am looking into buying a 93 or up (preferably 96 or up) v6 camaro, black with t-tops with HIGH miles for under $7000, then take out the v6 engine and tranny and put in a stick z28 v8 engine in and a tranny in, just so insurance would be cheaper cause they would think i have the v6 but anyway...i need your help to let me know if this is possible? can i switch from a stock v6 to the z28 v8? and if i do get say a 95 could i put the newer 96 v8 engine in there? So if anyone can help me out PLEASE let me know.....and also if you know where i can get a 93 or newer black with ttops and high miles let me know also
Thanks

The money you save on insurance would be pennies compared to the cost of an LT1 conversion. V6 Camaros are SO weak! If you've got $7K, you can find a real Z.

well im 18 and have been in 2 accidents and have 2 tickets so the insurance would be a lot cheaper on the v6 i checked....but i can get the v8 1997 engine for 1400 with a 7 year warranty and i was going to install it myself....but i just want to know if this is possible? and 1996 was the first year that they changed the v8 engine around right?

Who's offering LT1's with 7-year warranties for $1400?! I'll buy every one they have!
It's certainly possible but you'll need the harness, transmission, rear-end, alot of time and money to do it right and have it be reliable. 1998 was the first year for the LS1, which is a whole 'nother can-o-worms to convert. An LT1 conversion (93-97) would be far easier if you insist on doing it.

Its a website that sells rebuilt engines...so your sayin i would have to buy a rear end? what would i need that for to do the conversion? and how much of a difference would it be to put the ls1 engine in an older body? the only reason im asking is like i said im 18 and dont really have the money to go buy a 96+ z28 or ss so what would be my best bet? but i do want A LOT of hp....0-60 times quick in a 93+ camaro....HELP!!!!!
Thanks

A rebuilt LT1 probably doesn't have accessories or even an injection setup, so you'd have to source them separately. The LS1 would be MUCH more expensive to buy and even more headache to convert. You'll need a new rear as most V6 cars have no posi and a 7.5" rear, and the 8.5" rear in the Z28's is adaquate at best! Stick with a 93-95 Z28 for cheap power, as your insurance company will also nail you the first time you have a claim on a "V6" camaro with an LT1 in it, maybe even deny any claims. You'll be in DEEP shit if you are in an accident where someone gets hurt as the insurance company will deny EVERY claim based upon your mods (read the fine print), and you'll be on the hook for any damages!! I found that out after pulling my Camaro into a claims office with a broken windshield in 1997. The car was obviously not powered by the original 305 and I had to update my policy to the tune of about $250.00/year.

yea you are right maybe i will just have to stick it out and pay the insurance for the v8 and just get a z28 93+ :( and maybe rebuild the z engine when i have a little money...and make some mods to it...but do you have any suggestions on what to do to make my 0-60 times really low?
Thanks

Well obviously more power would help... in a nutshell... Any part that'll gain you some more power, a set of gears, and good tires.

Thunder Racing (http://www.thunderracing.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=home) is a good site for picking up go-fast-goodies. Theres other sites but I like them best cause the site layout is easy to navigate... and I'm just lazy. :D

Stock Valve cover and Oil pan and timing chain cover will work just fine. They dont add performance... just make the car look better if you get chromed pieces.

Save yourself the $ and get some stock parts from any autoparts store.

The Stock intake for the LT1 flows pretty good, so I'd suggest using it for now. I personally dont think I have never seen an aftermarket LT1 intake... except maybe the LT4 intake... I could be wrong...

Actually have done the same thing that you are talking about doing. Depending on the year of V6 that you get there could be either alot of a little work to do. In my case i own a 95 that i converted using a 95 LT1 and trans. Needed was complete engine assembly (all pumps, mounts, ECM, and engine wiring harness) and trans. Also needed will be K member and strut springs from a LT1 f-body car any year from 93-97 f-parts salvage would be a great place to get the entire k member with all suspention parts for $200 on the dot plus shipping if you are unable to pick it up yourself it is located in Bristol, PA. Other wise you will need the lt1 fuel pump assembly and lt1 radiator, depending on if you go with a 6 speed or an automatic you will also need a trans crossmember.

Crap, I'll sell you my car for 4K even if you're close enough. I've seen a wrecked Z28 with just body damage in the paper about 2 weeks ago for 1K even. That would be your best bet to switch an engine over.

As for best. The LT1 intake manifold is excellent in stock form and with some port work to the runner is even better. The only thing that you mentioned that would effect performance in anyway is intake manifold which I already mentioned and the stock timing cover would need some modification if you planned to install a heavy duty double roller timing chain but I doubt you would do anything like that right away.

John

P.S- its just my opinion but from my pricing of performance parts I have been purchasing www.summitracing.com (http://www.summitracing.com) , www.jegs.com (http://www.jegs.com) and www.gmpartsdirect.com (http://www.gmpartsdirect.com) have way better pricing than thunder racing and summit is easier to navigate IMO due to the search for parts via your vehicle options they give now. Good luck

Well i have a 71 camaro with a 383 stroker pushing 485 hp from the engine and a turbo 400 tranny so i know the insurance for you would be high if u put that in your car but i have classic car insurance which gives me the same insurance price as it was in 1971. You could put a v8 in your cam and still get low insurance if u tell them its a v6 still but with your 7k you can easily buy a cam for that price with the 350 in it. I'd go and buy a v8 camaro and sell the v6 one off for a lower price and put that towards a v8 cam. Good luck on your search bro.

Wow, I am losing my touch. I am usually quick to the draw to close these things first. Oh well at least I get to now :icon16:
