Hey,
So I was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction...
Basically what I want to do with my car is find a crate motor to replace the one thats in it now or to swap out for an SRT 4 motor, put a turbo, computer chip, exhaust, better clutch, etc.
It is a 2001 Dodge Neon R/T model. I am wondering about how much an SRT 4 swap would be if it is even possible in this model of Neon or if someone could point me in a direction of someone who might know. I also if possible would like to know where and what name brands etc are worth me getting and sticking on my car. I know a few just figured I would come to people that know cars better than I do.
I am looking to do everything to get it back to my daily driver. Than slowly work on everything else.
Please help and give opinions on what would best and semi cheap.

The SRT-4 engine swaps into any neon 95-2005 but its not a direct swap. It takes some time and wiring. People swap them into the 2nd gens neons all the time and are really happy.
What is your goal for the car?

Okay well I know that an SRT 4 motor would have more power and such coming out of it. I am going to be having a kid throughout the next year and I am looking to go semi cheap, but still getting some power. I have to option and I wanted to see what people thought would be a better idea. Leave your thoughts.
First off I have a 2001 Dodge Neon R/T...
First option is that I get a crate motor for a stock 2001 R/T and put a turbo, computer chip, exhaust, intercooler, air intake things such as that.
Second option is that I do an SRT 4 swap on it. Get more power out of it and do basically everything the same just with an SRT 4 motor instead.
Now I know the second one sounds cheaper, but I am not to sure how cheap I can get the SRT 4 motor or the Crate motor for. Basically at this point I am looking for prices and trying to figure out what the better option would be in this situation.
Please respond on what you think...

I think swapping in an SRT4 motor would be the less time consuming idea and may be cheaper in the long run if you can search for a real good deal.
There are no more turbo kits for the neons, so you would have to custom build one for your R/T. And unless you know what to look for, you may buy wrong parts and such.

Yeah.
Well hopefully it would be the cheaper way as well. Do you know what parts to look for to do the swap and about the cost of it. I know I found a few turbos for neons on the internet, and I have a bunch of friends that have had neons where they took the turbos off so they have them laying around, but I would rather go a newer one.
so if possible do you think you could help me come up with a pricing list on both so that I can show the guy thats going to be helping me do the work. That is if it is not to much work to do that. Figured you would know around about ways for coming up with a pricing on both.
Thank you

Engine
Tranny (you can use your current tranny as well)
Complete Engine Wiring Harness
Complete Engine Bay Wiring Harness
Power Steering Pump, lines, and cooler
Clutch master and slave cylinder
Clutch/Brake Pedal assembly
Intercooler and piping
Radiator Hoses
Lower Motor Mounts (the hole in the lower mount is larger for larger bolts)
SRT PCM (wont' need the bracket if swapping into an 03+)
Axles (and half shaft if it isn't on the engine)
Coolant Bottle
Fuel Line from tank to engine bay
Fuel Pump
Flex Fuel line from solid fuel line to fuel rail
Short evap hose that comes from the purge valve
All vacuum lines and the 3 selonids
Turbo Housing + o2 Housing
Lower Control Arms (they're stronger yet the same in shape)
Sentry Key Module + Key that matches the PCM VIN number.
Radiator (aren't totally sure if this is an absolute need)
You can search www.car-part.com for parts you need including the engine. There is a place about 300 miles from me that has the engine for $2100.

okay,
That is for the SRT 4 swap correct?
Now say for now until I saved up a ton more money and wanted to just go stock and such and keep it simple how would I go about that. Sorry for asking so much would rather ask a lot of question than pay the price on doing somehting wrong.
thank you

Your best bet, may be to find a wrecked SRT4 and swap away. You can sell off any parts you don't want or need as well.

ahh.
This is true.
Do you know any good sites where I can find a wrecked SRT seeing as I live in NY most people don't try to buy SRT's because of winter around here, but I have wanted to do this swap for quite a few years.

Well no I meant like what can I do if I was to put the original crate motor in it?
I want to look at all my options because like I said I might be having a kid within the next year, so money might be a little tight

I don't know of any sites but you can check around junkyards, auto auctions and such.

okay, now say I found a motor in a junk yard or in a wrecked car. Would I need to rebuild that motor before I did the swap into my car or would that all depend on the condition of the motor and how long the car has been sitting?
Christopher_John
07-23-2012, 08:13 AM
I don't have any problems with the current motor. I just didn't want to put a turbo and such on the car without either rebuilding or doing a crate engine. I would rather go with the crate engine because basically its brand new and the turbo wouldn't punish it as much unless it was hooked up wrong.
I want to do the SRT 4 swap, but as mentioned child might be on the way sometime this year so is there somtehing I could do to maybe juts make it have a little more balls behind it.
basically in my opinion the R/T model doesn't have enough balls behind it thats why I am looking into all of this and the body on my car is a 2001 and has not a spec of rust on it at all, so figured I might as well spend the money to make the car even better.

If the car is running well then I wouldn't tear into the motor at all. You can do basic stuff such as CAI, Header, better flowing exhaust, upgraded PCM (there is no magic chip for the neon), bigger TB, and UDP.

Okay and that will be excessively cheaper correct?
so what things do I need to do and do you have a site you recommend getting these parts at? or?

It would be considerably cheaper. I get most of my parts from Modern Performance, but if you are looking for used parts let me know. I know a lot of people selling used parts.
Christopher_John
07-23-2012, 10:13 AM
Okay, well I mean if the used parts are in good shape I have no problem using them. I just don't want to be screwed over lmfao. I think I might go with this cheaper way until I actually have the money to drop the SRT swap into it all at once.
Okay so what is the parts list I need for this cheaper way and modern performance is going to get a look at right now.

Bolt-on Performance is the cheaper way:
Cold Air Intake (look for the AEM)
Header (Modern Performance makes a nice Mid length one)
Better flowing exhaust
PCM (AFx is the only available one)
UDP (Modern has a good one as well)

okay.
what type of exhaust do you recommend?
and okay I am going to figure out the pricing of both and see if it is not to much more than i might just as well do the swap.
