Has anyone replaced the upper steering shaft seal on the steering box with this type vehicle ? the seal part is a gates #349650.
box is good . small leak for a few weeks now . leak fixer did not fix. slowed down a bit though .

purchased the gates 36950 stub shaft input seal kit which is supposed to be the correct seal[s] for this repair. the kit I got had the correct shaft seal . the O ring was too small. also the kit should have 2 O rings for the hoses and one for the internal port of the stub shaft housing. this was not included so I would recommend getting the complete seal kit before this repair.
I removed the ISS from the steering box input by just removing the locking bolt and then opening slightly with a screw driver blade the locking portion over the shaft. the steering rod slide back far enough to remove.
then I removed the two hoses on top of the housing. next the 3 bolts holding the housing to the steering box .
with then a slight rotation the housing slid off the box.
with a 15/16 socket flat end I used a vice and forced the seal/bearing out.
installed new seal and the bearing as it was , and using a vice and a socket larger this time to force in the assy to the same position as it was before . I used the internal port as a reference to get the position correct.
then I got some crocus cloth and polished up the stub shaft surface because of some ruffness and this was not rusted but did look worn due to no shield to protect this area from debris. 1996 has a shield. I then used coarser cloth to remove the rust on the exposed end of the shaft. placed power steering fluid on the shaft and housing seal and installed the housing. rotating back and forth to gently push on. put it all together and added 4 OZ of fluid no leaks for now.
this was all done with out any jacking or box removal. the steering wheel locks with the key off so no issues with the air bag etc wiring being damaged. took about 2 hrs. was careful with how this was put to gether . I would say now a one hour job. cost to fix was $7.32 .
cheap fix and no scrapped knuckles.
