Door lock/unlock issues

I have a 2002 Sportage 4 door with 85k. Recently, the power door locking system has not been operating the way I believe it should when using the key in the driver's door. On the passenger door, one turn to the right unlocks all doors, one turn to the left locks everything. That's fine. Normally, one turn left in the driver's door unlocks just that door while a second turn unlocks all others, one turn right locks all doors. Recently, all doors occasionally unlock with the first turn of the key in he driver's door. When locking, the horn sometimes gives a short (or long) beep.

Yesterday, the doors would not lock with the key in the driver's door - the key wouldn't even turn in the lock. I had to open the door and push the lock stem, which locked all doors. Later, turning the key in the driver's door to unlock caused the horn to go into alarm mode (BEEP - BEEP - BEEP - BEEP - BEEP - BEEP - BEEP - BEEP) until I pulled the key from the door and put it in the ignition.

There was no remote fob when I purchased this vehicle from a non-Kia dealer five years ago and I have not checked to see if one is available - (its on my bucket list).

I'm thinking something has gone (or is going) wonky with the control module in the driver's door.

Any insight is appreciated, and I will post the solution to this issue.

The key wont turn....hmm.. that simply means that the key might have lost its edges ie must have gone bald due to overuse...its a rare case but possible.

I suggest that you first check the key and then try other options.

Hope this helps

Thanks, Jim. I only got one key with the vehicle and have not found the correct blanks anywhere to have another made. Will probably have to go to a Kia dealer. I understand they can look up the VIN and tell me if a remote is available for my car. The thing with the key not turning in the driver's door was just that one time. And never any problems starting the engine.

WELL....HERE IS HOW MINE (2000) WORKS..and has worked all the time:

fROM DRIVER DOOR: if you lock with the lock button, all doors are locked.
if you lock with the key, all doors lock AND the horn beeps once AND the alarm is active.

WHen alarm is active, I must unlock from the driver door: if I unlock from the passenger side, the alarm starts sounding....

From the passenger side, locking or unlocking with the key will at times lock/unlock all doors ...or just the passenger door.... no questions asked..

Update:

Twice today, using the key in the driver's door, one turn left unlocked the driver's door only and it went into alarm mode (horn beeping an flashers going). Turning the key either direction had no effect. The only thing that worked was to pull the key from the door and insert it into the ignition, which stopped the alarm and unlocked all doors. Later, I parked the car, turned off the engine and removed the key from the ignition. When I pulled up the lock stem to unlock the doors, it started the horn and flashers going. So I stuck the key back in the ignition and it stopped, and it was OK after that. There is a switch on the hood which is part of the alarm system, and I did have the hood opened earlier today - just wondering if that may be a factor.

Again, your thoughts are appreciated.
