Engine Mgmt Light coming on - could lack of service cause this

I have a Peugeot 206, 2001 HDI. It was given to us, bit tatty, quite neglected, probably not serviced for a while but run fine with only 55k miles. So I only used it as a run around for low miles when restoring our home and haven't serviced it in the 2yr I've had it. But now the engine management light comes on randomly with a slight loss of power. I've also noticed it starts to run hotter when it's on too. Sometimes it'll go out, but only once engine is switched off. Could it be the filters needing replaced?

You are getting good service out of this " free to you " vehicle so I would definitely see what the " engine management light " is trying to indicate . It may be an intermittent problem but a problem still . It may be indicating some small , yet measurable problem but it also may be indicating some major problem that is developing that could eliminated with the proper service now . I definitely would see what is causing the light to come on and deal with it in a proper manner . Good luck !.

It sounds like it's been sitting around!

1) New air filter, fuel filter, and clean both the throttle body + MAF sensor.

Thanks for your help here guys. Just an update - I've noticed the fan doesn't work when stationery when the light's on! I waited until it came on, then let it run as had a hunch the increase in temp was due to the fan. So I'm thinking maybe viscous coupling or a the fan motor itself?? But then why does it sometimes come on when at speed?

Dunno, just throwing it into the mix, any suggestions?

The fan is going to turn on at a certain temp, a warm engine has better fuel economy + less emissions.
Doe's this car have a Check Engine Light (CEL) on? ,
