Hey guys,

I guess I need a new PS rack. It's leaking, I took it to a local shop - they said it's a small leak, so they put stop leak in. No good. What is a reasonable price for a new PS rack, total job, but not counting alignment?

Thanks

replace it yourself around $200 for the rack which comes with inner tie rods and replace the outers $12- 60 each depending what brand. It is not hard to replace these if you have the proper tools. At a shop we would charge around $600-700+ to replace the rack and put cheap outers on, then charge for the alignment. and probably see if we could get them to buy powersteering lines on top of that price.

While you can buy cheap aftermarket racks from NAPA or Autozone. I would not recomend it. I have had several cases of installing these cheap racks, only to have them leak, bind, have noises, or just plain not work. Sometimes right out of the box, sometimes within 6 months. I would recomend a delco reman gear. While I have also had some problems with them, its not near as often as the cheaper ones.

Whatever you decide, good luck!

Did the shop show you where the leak was when the car was on the lift?

No. I had the car in for inspection and I asked them to take a look at the leak. As I mentioned, I want to sell this car ASAP, I just need to get it fixed as cheaply as possible.
