Need helping choosing fuel pump

My vehicle is a 1998 Chevy K1500 pickup with a Vortec 350 V8 5.7L engine. Recently the fuel pump went out and I'm not exactly sure what I should replace it with. To my understanding, I have to replace the fuel pump with a high pressure pump, but how do I know if the pump is good enough? Which brand should I get? If I want to replace just the pump and not buy the whole assembly, does the pump have to match the brand of what's in it?

It's best to go with the OEM AC-Delco Delphi pump that's matched to your VIN.

Are you 100% the fuel pump is bad? Its a mess of a job to get into, you may want to search youtube for a video that will give you a preview of what your going to get into.

The diagnosing that I've done is that there is no more buzzing sound when I try to start the truck (which won't start), and I checked after to see if maybe a fuse had blown but they all looked good to me. I've never changed a fuel pump before, but I've got a buddy that owes me one that said he'd do it for me if I got the pump.

There are two important things to check before you spend the money & effort replacing the pump assy.

1. Check for 12v on the grey wire at the fuel pump wiring connector coming from the chassis. This voltage should be present for 2 secs when the key is turned to the "run" position.

2. Check for a good ground signal on the black wire at the same connector.

If both of these turn out good then most likely the pump is shot. I strongly urge you to do these 2 steps before proceeding.

777 is correct above - replacing one of these pumps is a messy job and you only want to do it once. Stick with the AC/Delco (Delphi) part, or you will be able to accrue a bit of practice.
