1999 S10, Gas leak just under/behind passanger door

I have been smelling gas after i park the car in the garage when i open the garage door to use the truck.
I have now noticed a gas drip from one of the lines that run under the drivers side of the truck.

OK, it looks like one of the lines has a connection right where it is leaking. The connection is covered by a rubber tube but it looks like it covers a plastic quick connector of some kind. The metal tube that runs back to the gas tank looks to be well rusted and flakes of metal are coming off it. I did not want to try and test how strong the metal tube is because it may break.

So i am not sure if i will need a new tube and drop the tank just to replace it or if it is just the connector that has failed. I would normally do these things myself but i don't know how much work this might end up being.

Can anyone comment on this issue, is it normal for metal gas tubes to rust out. There are four tubes that run front to back in that area and a few of them are rusted and the other look just fine.

So i was thinking about taking it into the dealer and have them fix it. I know they will cost more then other places but i think it will get done right the first time. I just hate job that turn into one thing after another and this looks like one of those jobs.

It is not uncommon to find that the fuel lines rust out or the vapor lines or the brake lines that all run down the frame rail.

As to going to a dealer, your choice, but there are good shops out there who could do the work with OEM parts.

If it is the line I am thinking of which would be the pressure line from the pump to the filter, you may want to consider changing out the fuel pump since they may have to drop the tank to remove the other end of the line. If your mileage is 140K to 150K or higher, it might be a good idea but then that is just my opinion.

Thanks for the info. Most likely the line or lines need to be replaced also then. It is not the line that has what might be the filter in it (if the filter is the fist size cylinder inline in the other line) but the line that connects to that filter has some surface rust also but it is not leaking and is not that bad yet.

This truck just hit 60K and runs great so i will wait for the pump to fail before replacing it. Only other problems i have are the third door seal, i hear air noise when drive over 50 MPH.

The driver seat lumbar adjustment handle broke off. When going over a speed bump i hear some noise from the shocks or the ball joints, stabilizer area, but it is 12 years old so i am sure it could use some work in those areas.

Just to update the thread on what i did. I took it to the dealer and was given a quote of 4 hour to drop the tank and replace two lines and the fuel filter. $617.00. The e-vap line was leaking.

I got the truck back after about 4 days and it ran good and no more leak. A few days later the Check Engine light came on. I took the truck to the auto parts store and he read the code P0147 and cleared it and it has not came back.
I think it Check Engine light came on because i was loading the truck with compost and the tail pipe might of got close to the ground when i started it up and pulled out.

Anyways the truck seem to run a little better i think because the vacuum is a little higher and it shifts a little better and i think it goes into overdrive better now, so i should get better mileage.

The code read indicates the heater circuit for the O2 sensor. I think it is for Bank 1. Anyway, it may or may not come back but it any event, it is indicating that you have a heater circuit malfunction.

Sorry you had to spend all the bucks and I wish you all the luck there is!

And as one fuel purveyor used to say....Happy Motoring! (anyone remember that?)

Thanks for the code info. I have to get a service manual to locate those things if the code comes back, but it has been about a week now and all is well.
