2004 GTP Issues

I'm replacing the valve cover gaskets on my 2004 GTP. In doing so I noticed that i also have a couple of injector wires that have rubbed on something through the insulation. I have never worked on an injected engine. Is there a special service tool or a trick to removing the electrical connector?

Also (problem #2), I have removed all the bolts for the bracket that the dog-bone and coils bolt to, but it doesn't want to budge. The only thing i can see that might be holding it is the tensioner for the super charger belt. Am I missing something?

Any help would be much appreciated...

Welcome to AF!!

The injector wires are not remove and do not take a special tool. Just take your time and they should come off easily. There is a retainer clip on the injector that you need to pull up to loosen the connector from the injector. A flat blade screwdriver will work.

As for the mount that the coils are mounted on there is a long bolt with a nut under the mount that has to be removed to get the mounting bracket off. It is a pain to get to. I used a deep well socket when I removed mine. You may be able to get it off by using a small 12 point socket on the end of the stud and remove the entire stud rather than just removing the bolt.

Thanks for the advice. I was able to get the injectors out, but the bracket is being a bit of a pain. I may need a larger persuader.

I also found both heater hose elbows broken and the Lower intake manifold looks to be leaking. This one has tuned into a bit of a project.

The elbows can be an issue as they become brittle and break. The lower intake leaking is unusual for a GTP as they are a better grade of gasket than the normally aspirated engine although it can happen. The job will take a while to do but can be done with ordinary hand tools. I suggest OEM elbows from a GM dealer although you can purchase them from other sources. A garage will charge you between 400 to 600 dollars to do change the lower intake manifold gasket and you can do it for less than $100 it just takes a few hours to do. Good Luck!

I ordered the Delco elbows through Rockauto.com as well as the rest of the gaskets. Concerning the intake gaskets, The oil could very well be coming from the leaking valve covers, but as wet as it is I'd rather be safe than have to tear it down again. Is a simple resistance check good for the injectors and how long do they usually last? They look pretty clean on the combustion chamber side, but again, this is my first rodeo with an injected car. I really appreciate your help.

Injectors can last the life of the engine. I have seen them go for 200K miles and more without any problems. Pontiac 3.8 engines have had issues with leaking valve cover gaskets especially if you use synthetic oil. Make sure you change them while you have the car torn down as it will be much easier to do with everything off the car.

If this is the mount you are talking about this may be your issue. you have to remove this to get it off. alsi use plasti dip to coat the injector wire to seal it, or electrical tape.
