Recently purchased a kia sportage 2000. At first we had to keep winding it over with not hitting the go pedal - and it would start . But when we would go to stop, it would stop. So had to keep the rev's up too keep it running. Idle when starts about 600rpm . It could take us anywhere from 5mins to start it , to 20mins ! Just trying to get it too idle. It then when it fired, i could rev the engine whilst in neutral. (5 speed box)
We drove it out on the back roads , got it up too 80km per hour and soon as we went to climb a hill , i had to change down the gears back to 3rd to get it up the hill. Soon as i would put my foot down - it would chug and spit n cough like it was choking and you could hear the engine wanting to die !
The engine light was on - so had it taken to a bloke here to chuck it on the computer. Cam sensor to be replaced - which has been done.
Car came back and was idle at around 900rpm . So since the cam sensor been replaced , we found that the car would idle higher, a little easier to start . But our problems have not been resolved with the gutless power and wanting to still stop . So we have looked at the fuel filter , all the fuses as it all looks ok.
Went to start the car 2 days ago - and sounds like its running on 2 cyl's .
Everytime to hit the throttle it's like its choking - the engine !
Will not idle to what it was and will not rev in neutral .
Went out today and it wont even run . We have put a clear fuel filter on too see if the fuel is crappy - but the car just winds over and over . Eventually you could get it too fire , but it would only last 2 seconds and die - after like 2mins of cranking it over .
The fact is now, we cant even get it out of the driveway - to the mechanic . It just wont fire or run .
Appreciate any advice.

More information would be helpful. Had the car sat for a long time before you got it? How many km on the odometer? Have you replaced (or at least inspected) the spark plugs/cables? Have you filled the tank with fresh fuel?

As suggested above, this engine is very prone to ignition problems and I have experienced them too. This is the easiest option to verify and must be taken care of. YOu have to lift the valve top cover to access the coils, wiring and plugs. see gasket and kiatop at www.avigex.ca/kia. .Check for oil contamination.
And....depending on mileage, any of/or all below can be involved:
- rear O2 sensor that gives a false rich and leans the mixture too much....but this is supposed to be involved only once engine has warmed up and closed loop control is activated..however proven to have been a solution in similar cases..one recent...but hardly explains coughing.
- timing belt has jumped one or 2 notches ...common if car has high mileage with an original belt...your symptoms ..once ignition is cleared...are really suggesting that option...check timing belt items on my website above. Complete kits available on ebay.
- crank sensor (rather than cam sensor...)...near transmission bellhousing ..visible but a little hard to reach.
