RINGKÄMPFER Porsche 997GT3R 24h

Dear community,

being very motivated at the moment due to the upcoming motorsport season i started my latest project, the Fujimi Porsche GT3R in 1:24 scale.

I want to depict a car as it COULD have participated at the 24h at the Nürburgring in 2011. So no real / particular car is going to be built here but a car with a fantasy livery (although not quite sure about the colours by now…..;-) I have some ideas, but….be surprised as I’m going to be.

The Porsche will not only be finished in my typical finish line livery but will also have a physical damage at the front left wheel arch, caused by a collision / clash with another car during the tough and long race. So I will scratch some things here and there, e.g. inner housing and part of the front left radiator just to have “something there”. Call it guess work, I don’t care if it’s 100% correct. It’s just to obtain a satisfying look in the end. I only had some ref pics and I didn’t want to spent my time by searching the web for hours and hours.

Here we go:

The openings had to be cut out and were remade from sheet styrene.

http://i471.photobucket.com/albums/rr79/gulf009/Porsche997GT3R%20Fujimi%201-24%20finish%20line%20kieslich/jk997-003.jpg

http://i471.photobucket.com/albums/rr79/gulf009/Porsche997GT3R%20Fujimi%201-24%20finish%20line%20kieslich/jk997-003A.jpg

http://i471.photobucket.com/albums/rr79/gulf009/Porsche997GT3R%20Fujimi%201-24%20finish%20line%20kieslich/jk997-003C.jpg

http://i471.photobucket.com/albums/rr79/gulf009/Porsche997GT3R%20Fujimi%201-24%20finish%20line%20kieslich/jk997-003D.jpg

The gap between the body and the chassis will disappear once when the parts are fixed and glued together

http://i471.photobucket.com/albums/rr79/gulf009/Porsche997GT3R%20Fujimi%201-24%20finish%20line%20kieslich/jk997-003E.jpg

Here you can see the damage of the depending area. The sharp edged body parts will be treated in the same way as the pit crews do in real race conditions: namely fix the area with strong black tape to prevent more anger and the risk of a total loss of several parts! So wait ‘till the very end!

http://i471.photobucket.com/albums/rr79/gulf009/Porsche997GT3R%20Fujimi%201-24%20finish%20line%20kieslich/jk997-005.jpg

The central lockings……….well, I have to admit something like a small paranoia. Being not satisfied with anything I decided to make my own ones. Thinnest styrene profiles and a new x-acto blade together with some drafts of red wine gave me the energy to come over these 4 parts. But I’m pretty fine with them by now.

http://i471.photobucket.com/albums/rr79/gulf009/Porsche997GT3R%20Fujimi%201-24%20finish%20line%20kieslich/jk997-007.jpg

The exhaust is another part which also needed some activity. I made two openings in
aluminium sheet, rolled the thing like a burrito and then made two smaller pipes to put them into the holes. Then just a few details added and ready for finishing! Bare metal, just as the real one.

http://i471.photobucket.com/albums/rr79/gulf009/Porsche997GT3R%20Fujimi%201-24%20finish%20line%20kieslich/jk997-012.jpg

http://i471.photobucket.com/albums/rr79/gulf009/Porsche997GT3R%20Fujimi%201-24%20finish%20line%20kieslich/jk997-013.jpg

The seat (which really is one of the bad parts of the kit as sam01contact already mentioned) got a cover of a mixture made of warm water and white glue. Then a substance was made out of flocking powder and grinded pastel chalk and this mixture was sprinkled onto the wet surface. Due to the fact that later on the seat is barely visible I was Ok with it and additionally had no other one in the backhand).

http://i471.photobucket.com/albums/rr79/gulf009/Porsche997GT3R%20Fujimi%201-24%20finish%20line%20kieslich/jk997-015D.jpg

Some parts of the interior. The fire extinguisher needed some extra detailing so as the gear shifter. The steering wheel is of very good quality and was handpainted and lettered with a 000 pencil. The ring received a treatment in the same way as the seat.

http://i471.photobucket.com/albums/rr79/gulf009/Porsche997GT3R%20Fujimi%201-24%20finish%20line%20kieslich/jk997-016A.jpg

The dashboard / panel was equipped with cables and a selfmade display.

http://i471.photobucket.com/albums/rr79/gulf009/Porsche997GT3R%20Fujimi%201-24%20finish%20line%20kieslich/jk997-017C.jpg

The inside before installing the rollcage and the seat. Almost every cable and extra detailing is guess work. It’s just to have something there in case of a closer look from the outside through the glasses

http://i471.photobucket.com/albums/rr79/gulf009/Porsche997GT3R%20Fujimi%201-24%20finish%20line%20kieslich/jk997-018.jpg

http://i471.photobucket.com/albums/rr79/gulf009/Porsche997GT3R%20Fujimi%201-24%20finish%20line%20kieslich/jk997-018B.jpg

The rollcage was equipped with a self made interior camera hanging from the top, a manufacturer identification plate and various cables and clamps.

http://i471.photobucket.com/albums/rr79/gulf009/Porsche997GT3R%20Fujimi%201-24%20finish%20line%20kieslich/jk997-019B.jpg

The y-formed part of the cage was installed AFTER the rollcage was fixed in the tub. So special care could be taken for the fitting of the seatbelts!

http://i471.photobucket.com/albums/rr79/gulf009/Porsche997GT3R%20Fujimi%201-24%20finish%20line%20kieslich/jk997-019C.jpg

The interior 99% done. Lots of details will be hidden later on…….a common fate for all of us.

http://i471.photobucket.com/albums/rr79/gulf009/Porsche997GT3R%20Fujimi%201-24%20finish%20line%20kieslich/jk997-020A.jpg

http://i471.photobucket.com/albums/rr79/gulf009/Porsche997GT3R%20Fujimi%201-24%20finish%20line%20kieslich/jk997-020C.jpg

A few days ago I began to think about some additional small and unique gimmicks. Therefore I started sculpting my own pair of racing gloves to put on the roof. It seems nothing appropriate is on the (after)market by now so I was enforced to give it a first try. They were made out of magic sculp, formed separately and brought together when the paste was still moist. Maybe one day I’ll make my own driver, it gave me a lot of fun and I want to do more with magic sculp! A great product.

http://i471.photobucket.com/albums/rr79/gulf009/Porsche997GT3R%20Fujimi%201-24%20finish%20line%20kieslich/jk997glove2.jpg

OK, that’s it for now. Thanks for your time.
Every comment is very much appreciated! Have a great time and keep your glue fluxional!

A VERY SPECIAL AND WARM THANKS goes out to Mike..........................you make my Porsche run!!!!
Thanks a lot, my friend! More to come.................be aware.

Brilliant work, as ever Jochen...really looking forward to the progress on this build.

Hoping that the effects of the red wine helped you 'overcome' those tiny centre locks - the transposition of these words has vastly different connotations (but made me chuckle anyway!).:evillol:

Ah. Finally another one of your builds.
The wheel centre nut is a work of art in itself. You must have a very steady had and nerves of steel.

Definately going to enjoy this build.
The interior is already looking fantastic.
And also the damage to the bodywork looks very realistic. Did you thin the plastic around the damage area?

Hi all,
thanks a lot for your encouragement!
Just a small update and personal answers.

@tonie: Here are two pics of the muffler before installation. Later on the whole area will be upgraded with frankensteined kit parts.

http://i471.photobucket.com/albums/rr79/gulf009/Porsche997GT3R%20Fujimi%201-24%20finish%20line%20kieslich/007.jpg

http://i471.photobucket.com/albums/rr79/gulf009/Porsche997GT3R%20Fujimi%201-24%20finish%20line%20kieslich/009.jpg

@derxl: yes indeed i thinned the plastic a bit from behind to achieve harder edges!

Just finished my interpretation of that typical blue signal light at the inside of the windshield. These lights can be seen often fixed to the glass with ordinary tape, in fact!! I think they are installed there to warn the (slower) cars / drivers in front at night.

http://i471.photobucket.com/albums/rr79/gulf009/Porsche997GT3R%20Fujimi%201-24%20finish%20line%20kieslich/005a.jpg

the small box is made out of sheet styrene / plastic card covered with silver foil / bare metal self adhesive foil. The lenses are looted.............from my little girls. They had a piece of plastic sheet with glass pearls in every kind of colours and diamater to stick them everywhere. They were given a new one today, sure!!! I bought a big new one for them. I think the look of the little box is pretty cool and will stand in contrast to the heavily weathered surface later on.

OK folks, have fun, all the best

Hi Jochen,

Thanks for the pics. That will be a very good inspiration. You made me curious what the other frankensteined parts will be :)

Correct me if I am wrong, but I thought that the blue light is sort of a permanent blue flag for the 30 fastest qualifiers? Your interpretation looks very good anyway.

Hi all,
after finishing my helmet …….on with the main actor.

I’m busy with the body now. I decided to replace various significant body parts such as the front and rear underbody plate (with the 4 airstream deflectors) and the rear wing. Bending that one was quite a thrill, I wasted some material until I got the desired shape. Then a small tearing edge was added.
I use copper sheet for these areas. Sometimes dangerous to cut and sand the extremely sharp edges, but a clean and accurate looking in the end. That’s what counts, from my point of view.

Jochen,

Can you please go into detail on how you dirty up your models for this build. I had to go back and find your DBR9 build to see what people were talking about.

Two questions, after you apply the pastels, do you use anything to keep them in place? How do you move the model without fingerprints?

Great work, and thanks for your posts,
Tim

Ohhhhh, sorry, already fixed ( by PAYING photobucket's charges..............:-(

Thank you all very much for your kind comments. At least some personal remarks.

@John: Thanks!! The molded cables and details are "integrated" in the whole issue by carefully painting the upper surface. Don't try to get the paint down to the contact point / change over to the tub! Sure lots of additional parts were made and placed. Nothing was sanded or removed. By the way, a really fine detailed section from Fujimi.
@Tim Bradley: Thanks! Well, hard to tell the finish process in simple and dry words....i'll try to make it very clear and descriptive this time within my posts which are still to come.
- No more covering / protective materials / aids or laquers are applied on the pastels. I try to work as close to reality as possible. First you have the (clean) race car, then you have the race itself with ALL THE ACTION and DIRT, and finally you have the result of the race which is obvious on the car's surface. As simple as that ;-)
- Of course, that means you won't be able to touch the miniature later on BUT with one-way LATEX-gloves!!!!! But in the very end the miniature should finally be fixed / placed on a small display stand or a wooden base or whatever.
Hope that could give you some informations! Stay tuned. The car is already spray-painted!!!

Yours
Jochen

You are an Artist, Jochen.

I fear all the superlatives have been already spent and it’s difficult to issue a smart comment. In your (holy) hands everything comes to life.
I read the thread two times, silently admiring what you’re doing… The central wheel locking, the exhaust, the dash wiring, the cockpit itself… not to mention the absolutely crazy job you did on the Hans and helmet.

Really THANK YOU, thanks for sharing this with us.

....dirty feet.....

Let me show you my latest results. I just finished the wheels for my 997.
The metal rims and the brake discs are both from the range of superb products from Mikezibit / scaleproduction. The metal rims are by now replaced by his new plastic inserts, even more shiny in chrome. I wanted the metal pieces for some reasons and got them almost a year ago.

First of all a careful wash was given with artists oil colors, a anthracit tone was mixed therefore. After one hour of drying the brake discs were carefully cleaned with a piece of cotton fabric. A fantastic result can be achieved and the shiny discs will stand in a nice contrast to the weathered rims and slicks.

http://i471.photobucket.com/albums/rr79/gulf009/Porsche997GT3R%20Fujimi%201-24%20finish%20line%20kieslich/A.jpg

You can see the difference between the clean one (left) and the washed one (right)

http://i471.photobucket.com/albums/rr79/gulf009/Porsche997GT3R%20Fujimi%201-24%20finish%20line%20kieslich/B.jpg

The discs come out very nice, giving the parts the necessary depth.

http://i471.photobucket.com/albums/rr79/gulf009/Porsche997GT3R%20Fujimi%201-24%20finish%20line%20kieslich/C.jpg

The central lockings were painted with a mixture from Tamiya silver X11 and clear blue / clear red.

Then a mixture was made out of cigarette ashes, baking powder and grinded black acryl. The surface of the slicks were watered with a mix from white glue and warm water. Then the tyre is rolled through the substance and can be worked later on. The result is a nice, race battered and worn off look of a racing tyre / slick!!!
The marks on the tyre walls are customized decals (not available by now....;-) and show the starting number of my car, set number and position. The bar codes are hand painted with a paste made out of water and grinded white acryls. A very useful painting substance!
Then the rims are SEPERATELY spray painted from BEHIND with a flat black color, giving the first layer of brake dust. Then the slicks are put on the rims and a second, VERY CAREFUL layer of a lightened color (kind of dark grey) is sprayed from the front.

Hi all,
like a lot of you already mentioned the 24h of the Nürburgring took place last weekend with the victory of the PHOENIX-Audi R8. Fascinated and motivated by the impressions i just finished the body of my GT3R so far. Some small details are still missing and will be fixed later on. The tyres are not fixed by now and therefore they may appear a bit warped in the wheel arches.
The hole livery is fantasy, so as the logos at the doors and the lettering "loop-logics". The logos were made out of left over dry transfers from Mecanorma and lots of hand painting. The Clarion-decal on the rear spoiler is cut in pieces and rearranged in a new width.
I also changed the wheels, Mike was right by not being convinced by them at all. The appearance was too dark!!! So i just flatened his new product, the fantastic ones with the multiple mounting system. The look is more realistic than before. I couldn't find one picture with the polished BBS rims being covered with that much brake dust as i put on them.......and again, LESS IS MORE!!!!

I deciced not to overdo it with decals, i need some space for some other effects, especially at the rear which is really unspectacular BY NOW. But wait.

So please have a last look at the Porsche before it will be treated the right way....;-)

As you might imagine, some decals are customized with the support of two members of the AF, mwhh and mikezibit. Please accept my kindest thanks for your help, friends!
Things wouldn't go as they do without you.

Next time i'll present the finished car with a step by step presentation of my finishing "activities".
Thats all for now.

Good fight, good night!

first of all the model is great and your skill is incredible jochen.

Btw on a model that is gonna be dirt and used I dont like the toysh blinking wheel finish.
I prefer your previous ones. Also looking at the pics taken from ring cars, they are not at all any longer chromed only after 2 laps, and even more on a track with thousands of breaking points as the ring is.

Also, the decal work is impressive, but on such beauty model u are creating I would choose one of the million real existing ones available on the market (also decaldoc makes many of theme).
Those are only my personal considerations without keeping away value to this really nice model.

Nicely done! Can't wait for the Schmutz. Did you just spray flat clear on the chromed centers this time?

I can see the point Paolo is making about the livery and I think he is right, but then you would not be able to change the driver names :) (Nice detail!)

or probably he must be much more close to real pics, and is surely not always easy to find the car u like, damaged as u like :D.

Go on jochen, make us dream with weathering :D

Dear Paolo and Tonie,
and all the others of course!
First of all thanks for your comments!! Very much appreciated.
Very interesting points to talk about, only some small remarks from me to explain my motivation on that one and / or reasons for this special project. I was very tired yesterday and didn’t take the time to point it out a bit clearer.
First thing is that I simply wanted to have my own racer and name on it..;-) You are right, there are some, not many, nice and attractive liverys and Porsche designs out there (but that depends on every single observer!).
This would end up in a replic of a real racer with a real fate and real reference. That’s the elementary point. I had that “feeling” and affinity when doing my DBR9. But this Porsche is the sum of my individual “what-if’s” and ideas (especially of the logos and appearance) BUT nevertheless being realistic and logical at all and in every way. Unfortunately i’m not rich enough to possess a real one so this is my miniaturized version….;-)
And I planned some real damage, dirt and dust on it. A unique subject. All that would make it not easier with a real racer. What if the /my choosen real livery was not involved in a collision?

Just read Paolo’s note, “to find the car you like, damaged as you like”, THAT’S IT EXACTLY, THANKS!!!

About the wheels / rims. I absolutely agree and must admit that the grade of impurity is too low. When looking at the pictures today I come to the same opinion. I will have to find a way BETWEEN my two “versions”. I’ll return to them once again for SOME more dust. That will look better and more realistic with the finished body / car. THANKS for your arguments!!!! Confirmes me at my impression.
All the best
Jochen

We all have been waiting to see the paint scheme, and it was worth the wait - looks great!

But, I see a fight in the pits from the tire companies reps. You have a Falken sticker and running Michelin tires!?!

You need a bigger Michelin decal to cover it up.

I can't wait to see it dirty!

Hi Tim,
thanks for your comment.

Please note that there are mandatory sponsors for every participant / car, irrespectively from the(ir) individual markings:

- FALKEN (tyre brand)
- BILSTEIN (dampers, suspension)
- ZURICH (insurance)
- ePost-BRIEF (Deutsche Post)
- GT Grand Tourismo (Playstation)

You won't see one car running the 24h at the Ring without them.

All the best,
jochen

It's called 'Contingency Sponsorship' and almost every race series has it.

Great looking Porsche, Jochen!

Jochen,
Thanks for your comments, but I have to respectfully disagree with you.

If it was a “mandatory sponsor” for tires, you would run that brand of tire.
Your photo on your posts shows a Dunlop window shade. You know they are not running Falkens or Michelins. I have never seen two different tire companies decals on a real racecar, unless it was an accident. Show me the photos. There are many articles about the “Tire Wars”

Look at these Rings photos:
http://www.racingsportscars.com/photo/Nurburgring-2009-08-23.html (http://www.racingsportscars.com/photo/Nurburgring-2009-08-23.html)

The Hankook 430 only has Hankook tires, showing their decals. The Team Felbermayr Porsche is runningMichelins with only Michelin stickers . There are no double sponsors of any kind.

Veyron: I know about “Contingency Sponsorship”, as I have run my Corvette Zo6 and Porsche 911 in club events.

I don't know how contingency sponsorship sticker requirements go in the car racing world, but I raced Formula Extreme superbikes here in the USA in the late nineties and for a time the series was sponsored by "Pirelli" - we had very small Pirelli decals on our tech inspection stickers, which could not be seen by spectators, but I ran large Dunlop stickers because they paid contingency money for podium finishes. There's a difference between the sticker of a "series sponsor" and a "contingency sponsor" - but there would definitely be a tire war - The tire companies are very protective of their markets - John

Hi Tim,
obviously lots of "accidents" happened...........here are only SOME pics from the last years edition.

Hope this helps. I don't know how this can be a point. It is totally clear that all kind of Logos such as Pirelli, Yokohama, Dunlop and others are SIDE BY SIDE with the Falken logos......so in that case your appraisal is proven wrong.

Thats it for me, yours
Jochen

Jochen,

I stand corrected! Thanks for all the photos, I would have lost a bar bet on that one, so, I owe you a drink!

Are double stickers common in Europe? I have seen tire reps get real nasty to car owners about the "other guys" stickers. I don't think I have ever seen that here in the states.

Again, thanks for the info, I have learned something new.

Tim - like I mentioned in my earlier post - it could a matter of "Falken" is a series sponsor since it is on all the cars, and requires all the participants to have the sticker, but "Dunlop" "Michelin" and "Yokohama" are contingency sponsors that the racer "entrant" has on the car to get the contingency money for various finishing positions. - John

Jochen,

Thanks for your offline email and enclosures last night. I'm starting to learn more about the "Ring"

As you said in your email:
But this is ONLY for the 24h-race at the Nürburgring, the VLN-Series do have others…………strange, seems like a science of its own………

I absolutely agree, somehow a kind of oddity, BUT, well the RING is not as all other tracks…………;-)))
