I own a 1989 firebird formula with an L98 motor in it.( I was told it was a Corvette Motor) Tonight I went up against a good friend of mine in a race. He beat me but, thats not the bad part he did it in a 2000 Ford mustang. It gets worse he has a v-6 motor. I need to know how to race an automatic and how I can get the most power out of my engine when I do race. Please, any comments or suggestions to help.

well, its old so these are some things ya need to do when u purchase a thirdgen
fuel filter
cap, rotor, wires, plugs
air filters
adjust TPS sensor
clean and reset IAT sensor
good oil and filter
tranny service and possible rebuild with better parts
tranny detent cable adjustment
timing
catalytic converter condition
rearend service
theres also lots of free mods for these cars to:
throttle body coolant bypass
weight reduction
port the EGR cast wall in the plenum
ac delete
emissions delete
cold air intake
bump up the timing
things you should do:
get an exhaust and high flo cats as well as headers (the stock parts are highly restrictive)
a cold air intake, or a K&N cone on the end of the stock
dual manual control fans
160 or 180 thermostat

Thanks I will definitely look into that. Do you know if I should use first second and drive gears when I race.
