What did the fluid look like when changed??
Did you find many steel shavings?
Is fluid at proper level "engine hot and drive it through all gears from P,R,N,D,3,2,1. ALL
engine must be running and on flat ground when you check it.
random misfire I doubt is wires or plugs. I would check the Cap Rotor and check for play in the distributor. wiggle the rotor left to right after you take off the cap. 1/8-1/4 inch of play is too much. The distributor has a worm gear on it and over time the gears wear allowing play.
If all this is fine I would check for a VAC leak and fuel pressure. We can help you do all the test you need to do if you don't know how.

The trans wires wouldn't effect how it idles in park. You can remove the trans harness and it would still run.
If you had to remove the distributor make sure it is in correct location. There are 4 possible locations that you can put it. If you look at the bottom of it it will look like a Philips head screw.
Second make sure that you have the spark plug wires in correct order.
Third make sure that you connected the ground wires that you took off for the head job. even that little bugger by the fuel lines on the back of the engine.
If all is in order I would check and see if you have a vacuum leak. this is easy to do with a tool that you can rent from any auto store and connects in seconds. I can tell you how to do them if you need.
MAKE sure that you reconnected the wires to the MAF and IDLE air control on the air intake.
Are you showing any codes??
Did this SUV have a misfire before you did the head job?
Do you know you don't have a cracked block or warped heads?

thank you it ran ok when i pulled the distributer i put it back like the book said i pulled 1 plug waited for back pressure and alined the timeing mark put the distributer back in with the roter pointed at the number 6 all wires are in order it does show bad mass air but unpluged it runs the same will the engine run if i pull it again and put the roter on the 8 and drop it in ? will the engine run in any other position ? does the computer control the trans in this smart track trans ? no worped head or cracked block got all the coolant leaks pluged the foor is dry hooray for that i bought this in good faith i was told the heater didnt work and brake line fixed all that its in good shape hate to have to replace trans its only got 98000 replace distributer??? theres rilly no place for vacume leaks torked it all down and new gaskets all around :crying: i do:smile: so apriciate any and all your help

ok, If any place for a vac leak I would suspect the valley where you put rtv.
With a bad mass air flow sensor it will run like garbage. You should tell a very big difference when you unplug the maf. If the one you have is bad then don't expect it to run good. Never clean the maf with anything but maf cleaner.
Yes the ECM controls the tranny
If you align the marks on the harmonic balancer then your rotor should point at 1 not at 6. you may just have yer dis 180 degrees off.
You said 8 what engine do you have in this truck.

"Yes, there are two marks on the damper. If you line them up like this, #1 is not necessarily on its compression stroke. What it does do, is put #1 cyl at TDC. It could be TDC of the compression stroke, or it could be TDC of the exhaust stroke, you still need to figure out which stroke #1 is on. Worst case scenario is rotate the crankshaft one revolution clockwise." old master

Check for codes.
The transmission has electric shift solenoids and pressure regulation.
The electrics are supposed to be able to be over-ridden by manually going through the gears with your shift lever.

In your first post you mentioned you had random misfire. Does this mean you retrieved DTC P0300? If so, that DTC is almost always caused by a fault in secondary ignition: Spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap, rotor, ignition coil. Low fuel pressure can also set P0300, but usually there are other symptoms involved.
If the distributor is not installed correctly, (off one or more teeth) P1345 will set and/or the engine will not start at all, or possibly backfire while cranking. As FishFind mentioned, if you line up the timing marks as in the image that he posted, and the rotor points to the "6" on the distributor housing, and P1345 is not set in memory, you're good.
If there's a problem with the MAF sensor, it will set a DTC for it. No DTC, no problem.
If you replace the distributor cap, rotor and plugs, (typically good for 100K miles) don't waste your time and money on aftermarket stuff, use AC Delco. Same with plugs, AC Delco double platinum only. Autolite Professional Series plug wires have better specs than AC Delco at 1/3 the price.
