temperture gauage

I have a 1995 chevy caprice 5.7. I started to have problems with my cluster. So i removed it and fixed the problem, and then another one occured. When i put it back in the tempture gauge was not working. When i turn of the car it reads a temp not sure why it does that. I would like to install a after market gauge. What would be the best place to install on the engine block.:confused:

does the guage when the engine is running read the correct temp?

why are you concerned about the guage position when the engine is off ?
