90 Celica timing camshaft & crankshaft?

The teeth on my timing belt came apart causing the belt to slip. The camshaft and crankshaft are not timed together.

1. I rotated the camshaft until the rotor in the distributor cap is aligned with the number one spark plug wire.
2. I turned the crankshaft until the number one piston is at TDC. I placed a small wooden dowel into the cylinder and when it was at its highest point the piston is at TDC. (I do not know how to tell if it is on the compression stroke or the exhaust stroke)
3. The car does not start
The car had great power when the timing belt went out.
I have spark out of the spark plugs. I have a book for this car and it doesn't say anything.

How do I know which stroke is the compression stroke?

Is there a difference between the compression stroke and the exhaust stroke?
