'93 Camry -V6 3VZ-FE - Compression test help

My repair manual states that I should remove all the spark plugs from the engine and have the engine at normal operating temperature before preforming a compression test. However, the last time I replaced my plugs, I had to remove the intake plenum to get them out. Shouldn't I have the intake plenum installed to do this test? Can I do a compression test with just the 3 spark plug holes in the front without removing the other plugs in the rear?

Yes, you can do a compression test with just the three plugs in front. The reason for removing all the plugs is to get the engine cranking at a standard speed, the max speed the starter will turn it. If your compression results are a little low, then this would be why. More importantly is the cylinder to cylinder variation. Of course, you can't test the rear cylinders with the plugs in....

The best procedure is to temporarily install the plenum after removing all the plugs. If you can't get to the rear holes with the plenum installed, then you have no choice.
