Stupid Government changes licensing

My provincial government is proposing some changes to the graduated licencing system, that in my opinion are fairly pointless. Some i can understand, but ofters just seem dumb.

"The proposals, to be announced by Solicitor-General Rich Coleman on Wednesday, are expected to include a rule restricting learner drivers to only one non-family passenger.

'So if you were a high-school student, you could drive a buddy to school -- but you can't take five or six,' Coleman told the Langley Advance News. 'But you can take your brothers and sisters to school and a buddy.' "

this one is the one i cant understand. Although they say learners licence, which already only allows one passenger other than fully qualified supervisor, you couldn't drive a bunch of people until you had a novice licence.

All this comes after a lot of trouble with street racing. How is restricting the number of friends in the car supposed to prevent racing? Other than reducing peer pressure by a fraction?

What if you were going to a movie with a bunch of friends, and you would normally only take one car. Now that you would have to take 3 cars, wouldn't this increase the possibility of street racing?

Yeah, they're really cracking down on teenage drivers. It's getting bad here too. We didn't used to have all these 'levels' and 'tiers' for a driving license, but all the street racing going on has caused the govt to make some crazy laws.

You're right, it's confusing. Wouldn't this 'restriction' increase the number of passengers in a car with a learner driver?

Seems lame to me anyhow...no one races with other people in the car, I mean for one I won't risk anyone else's safety...and plus why would I race with a few hundred extra pounds in my car? It would be like having a 2.4I4 mustang

How about a carbon fibre 'passenger' so you can use the carpool lane? http://students.washington.edu/leprakon/dtm-af/smilies/dunno.gif

it seems to me that if you and your friends had to take three cars, there would be more insentive to race than just one

yeah i know, for awhile i wanted one of those shirts with his mugshot on it.

it really doesn't make sense... marginally less peer pressure in the car to speed, but more cars on the road who get the chance to compete? duh...

I think it has a lot more to do with teenagers being a distraction to themselves, than racing.
