Hi guys,
just wondering how you guys launch when dragging from a dead stop........
Ive heard that putting the handbrake on, slowly letting the clutch out and then dropping the handbrake and clutch can be a good method.
Or is it best to not use the handbrake and drop the clutch.

You should only use the handbrake if your car is equipped with a launch control device. They are usually set up to be activated via the handbrake.

Slipping the clutch is ok, but not recomended. That would work for a while if you have a factory type clutch. Those who use paddle clutches will only burn them out.

So if you have a foot on the clutch, a foot on the accelerator, and you don't use the handbrake, how do you make sure you don't roll backwards or forwards??

The staging area of the drag strip is flat. Your car will not roll forward or backwards.

Guess I'm just used to shitty NZ roads, which are anything but flat; anywhere you go. Consequently, if I'm stationary, I just assume I need to hold the brake on.

The proper way to launch a 4WD turbo car is to use the handbrake.

1/. Put the handbrake on to a moderate level (depening upon your HP level).

2/. Redline the motor (your redline should be set correctly for your power band).

3/. Engage first gear.

4/. Step off the clutch.

5/. Slowly drop the hand brake through first gear, and if you've timed it right, by the time the hand brake is down, it is time to select 2nd gear.

Reasons: Pre-load 1st gear to obtain more boost off the line, reduce wheelspin (very important in a GTR, as rear bias will make it a bitch off the line with big HP).

Mario.

You dont drag with the handbrake on, how can that help, itll slow you down and cause a hell of a lot of wear to your rear brake pads and cause a lot of heat.

When launching a RWD car you only use the Ebrake if its an auto. Other then that you slip the clutch for the best launch. Or drop it and feather the gas for those who have a on/off clutch.

Hand brake is the best way to start for manual or auto. Not sure about keeping it up all through first...but i'm sure mario will show us why by whooping our asses in a drag.
Most race cars will have a hand brake for the sole reason of getting of the line.

Don't listen to mario he's an idiot. You do no use the handbrake at all, so get that out of your head. Push in the clutch put it in 1st gear, rev to 2800-3000 and take off.

visit www.exvitermini.com and say that Mario (the owner) doesnt know what hes talking about. Perhaps it works best on a car like his, but im sure him and his tuner know more about GTR's than most people outside of Japan.

btw even i can say from personal experience full revs (or thereabouts) works best with a GTR.

#1. First off you have no concept of launch control.
#2. You've done nothing but bring up an old dead post to slag someone off.
#3. Go to the SDU forums if you wish to do that, I am sure they will appreciate it more!
#4. Go and read the user guidelines, the link is in my signature.

b16, i think you should stick with hondas from now, hondas that come with a b16 hopefully, i haven't seen a factory rwd skyline gtr yet, maybe you can justify your response.

Well, there was the R33 GTR LM :p ...not exactly a production car though.

Actually Moon it isn't a "production" model persay. Hence the "LM" funny as they made a GTR LM and a GTS25t LM. From what I've dug up the RB26 was a very limited special order as in like 10 were built.

If the surface is flat dont need the hand break. Plus just keeping the RPMs at red-line wont spool up the turbo(s) you have to rev it a few times. Keep doing it and you'll notice the boost will rise each time you hit the throttle. If you keep it at redline then it will just stay at normal level. I'm not sure about using a hand break in 1st, I like to be going somewhere around 50 to 60k before I shift into second. Otherwise I wont get a good kick in 2nd. Plus if you have a good set of Nitto drag radials you'll launch just fine.
