1/12 57 Chevy

I figured...instead of lurking and commenting..I should do some posting :iceslolan

I've been a modeller since the age of 5(38 now)but I stepped back from it about 3 years ago for personal reasons.
Anyways...the time was right to jump back in...and boy, have I ever!! Im doing a whole bunch of things with this kit that I either have tried a few times..or never done before...Like painting flames and custom fabbing floors and frames!

I've posted all my progress so far in a thread on my mustang club site, so I figure is easiest if I just copy/paste everything from there :smokin:

Let me know what Ya think..'m always open to ideas, I cant get too heavy into the custom stuff though, as I dont have any lathes/etc.

For color I'm using nail polish(yes, you read correctly)as its fast drying, sets rock hard, polishes like glass and the range of colors is mind boggling! Main color is going to be a black cherry and I'm thinking of intense blue, or mystic flames on the front.

The stock slicks for the street/race versions are skinny cheater style and crappy...so Ive ordered some super fat tires from japan that are from a Lola t70 can-am car. Using these means Ive got some major custom work coming...I will have to back halve the chassis and build wheel tubs and new frame rails and suspension to make it all work!!

Update.....

Finished laying down the base color...a few shades lighter than I wanted, but that would be my fault for using grey primer instead of black primer..oh well...should still look titz when done http://gtamc.com/images/smilies/icon7.gif

Anyone who thinks flames are easy.....hasnt tried to do em in 1/12 scale :(

Its taken me 2 1/2 hours so far just to draw and cut out, then try and carefully place the friskit(masking sheet)into place on the doors!! I still have the hood to do and the tops of the fenders.....I have never ever tried something this involved before, and trying to make sure it works...cuz, there is no 2nd chance.

Update time......

Tires arrived from Japan, was hoping the rears would be wider, but now I probably wont have to back halve and tub the chassis. They are way better then the stock kit crap...more detail, better tread and better rubber...Firestones for the rear, Bridgestones on the front....same Mickey Thompson(ish)tread on both.

Just outlined the flames with pearl blue/teal nail polish....hope its not a mess when the mask is removed tomorrow :(

This is the 1st time in 34 years of modeling that Ive ever tried something like this..I'm so nervous!!

MASK IS OFF!!!

Turned out pretty good...few spots where paint went underneath, the biggest issue I think is top of the fenders...too damn square!! :(
Not sure how im going to fix that problem, but I will probably outline the flames with a thin line of the blue...over(under?)spray I will have to try and touch up by hand.

Not bad for a 1st effort I guess?

Just fixed the flames, A few tiny spots to touch up by hand....next up is figuring how to outline the flames..then fix the damaged clear coat.

Small update. Haven't had much time or oomph lately, but last few nights ive worked on the small(very small http://gtamc.com/images/smilies/icon10.gif )block 327 and M22 trans....in a few days when they've cured, I'll get more done.

Next up was the issue of rear tires and axle....tires ive picked are a tad too wide for the stock wells, so...to tub or not? BUGGER IT!!! Ive come up with a plan. Im going to save the stock frame and move the leaf springs inboard, narrow the axle right down and probably go with a set of old school(70-80's) F-1 slicks. Ive cut the rear floor/fuel tank/spare tire well, out and will replace with sheet plastic and a custom fabbed cell. This will give me the room I need to bring the springs in and then the final problem will be fabbing wheel tubs and reworking some of the rear frame.

As far as the motor...It comes with iron exh manifolds....that aint gonna work with a blown engine! So.......may have to try and fab some headers from aluminum tube or plastic.

Small update....

Was going to use super wide formula 1 tires, but the frame work involved is just gonna be too much this time around...back to using the can am lola tires.
I made a new trunk floor, removed part of a floor cross member and made 2 new sections there too. The rear end is too wide even for the skinnier tires, so I had to razor saw the spring perches off the axle and move them inboard....also needed to saw off the end of the shafts and rejoin them to the shortened axle.

Using plastic strip I made new spring boxes and a cross member, then applied filler....waiting a few hours for it to dry now.

That color looks incredible! I think the flames will look nice once they are outlined somehow. Not sure about the straight edge across the top of the fenders tho...
You didn't happen to sell the unused tires on eBay, did you? I bought some there but could use a couple more of what I think are the rear street tires for this kit...

The straight edge is fixed...I was going to outline the flames with blue or silver, but....I think I'm going to leave it(I dont want to chance messing it up again)the way it is.
As for the tires...I still have them. I may have to use 2 of the 'street' tires for the front, but I dont know yet as I'm a fair ways off getting to that stage. If I dont use em...You are more than welcome to them :cool:

Been slow going lately, I'm finding...the more I get into making one part 'work', the more fabbing I keep needing to do!! Monogram messed up in a few aspects of the engine....Im going to run the strip blower(their wording) but the distributor is molded into the back of the blower intake, the stock intake and street intake use a separate one, which is drilled for wiring...the strip motor isnt. So...I hacked of the molded one and cut down the separate one to fit :D But, its too tall for the blower to clear at the back, so I've made a riser plate to lift the blower enough to clear and run wires.
Also...there are no headers, only stock iron manifolds.....there is no way a blown motor would run worth a shat with that set up..so I'm going to try and make my own headers to get this thing looking more realistic.

Will post some pics tomorrow night hopefully :)

this may be usefull on the distributor problem, i did a chevelle kit that had the same problem, so i made a DIS pack like on modern cars

The chrome on the blower(and several other pieces)is not good, so Im priming it and will probably give it a coat of dull silver....like an un polished unit.

Chrome on the blower(and other parts)is crap, so I gave it a coat of DupliColor Metalcast basecoat...Did the stock valve covers too, just in case I decide to use them.
The rear axle is all detailed up and ready to go in. I have a bunch of scale fuel line and assorted tubing to add also. I still need to come up with rear shocks, so i may use the springs from the formula 1 kit to make some coil overs.

Got a bit more done....picked out the valve cover lettering with the body color, drilled out the plug wire holes in heads and distributor, and drilled the exhaust ports, next step is to fab up some header flanges.
I'm going to have to do something about the intake, I dont like the massive gap on either side at the front and rear.

Looking good, it is a tough crowd sometimes. Not many people visit the muscle section let alone AF. Good luck with the rest of the build.

Made a set of header flanges out of plastic sheet, got the blower and valve covers mounted, next up will be the bugger.....making headers from scratch. I will be using a roll of solder as its about the right scale and easy to bend to shape.

The exhaust part in the pic is from the kit...its such a well molded piece that I figured I may as well use it.

Small update.....finally finished and mounted the fuel cell, made from plastic sheet, bar stock for reinforcement and the straps are covered with aluminium duct tape :D

Little bit more done today....used some pins(cut down) as the bolts that hold the fuel cell in place and shortened the rear shocks to work with the narrowed rear.
Also made a proportioning valve for the brake lines.

I had a 3 day weekend, but after the headers fell apart...I walked away from the workshop, I might spend some time in there tonight.

Sorry for the lack of updates...life has tossed me a curve ball or two lately and ive had to put the chevy off for a bit...will try and get back at it soon :)

Started to get back into the project today....I put it aside to work on something for a friend, and it sorta sucked the life out of me as far as working on models goes. But the worst was getting rear ended by a drunk at highway speed, while I was stopped in traffic!!
My 2012 Mustang was written off with $31k in damage :( I walked away and spent a month dealing with all the b.s. til I finally got a new car.

Interior tub is done!!!

I used bare metal foil for the stainless trim..hate working with it, but you just cant beat the end result!
I used actual ford interior vinyl paint for the brown and a krylon copper for the inlays....wanted to go with a classic 50's interior scheme.

Just finished rubbing the paint out....mostly glass smooth now, but I have a big problem.............HOW DO I GET THE POLISHING RESIDUE OUT OF THE BODY GAPS!!:runaround::runaround:

Hopefully there is an easy solution to this problem?

Try toothpicks, but hopefully someone will have a better answer since I have the same problem

I read about the toothpick idea earlier...also came across a few forums discussing the same issue on real cars and people were suggesting the use of q-tips and either rubbing alcohol OR quick detailer?
Im gonna try the quick detailer today....will report back :)

Try warm water with some washing up liquid in it and a soft toothbrush, works for me.

Dave Thibodeau (daveyracer) once said put future floorwax down in there. I guess that depends where your reside is and in which gaps. That makes it "wet" and it is not white anymore and seals it in there being dark.

The trick is it has to make it all wet the first time or you seal it in there and it is white and you are stuck.

I have also taken a small flat paintbrush, trimmed the bristles shorter, so they are more firm and less flexible and used that as a scrubber of sorts to clean that out. That gets the big pieces out and then you can hit it with the future.

I am traveling now or I would take a picture of the brush/scrubber for you.

Well, being out of work now(going on a month :( )has given me a little more time to work on this, and I must say....I am so dis heartened with it....i want to smash it to pieces!!

Its almost done, im on final assembly of the body/chrome trim..and its awful, the chrome is so poor the red plastic shows through in all the wrong places and my only option is to foil over it..which of course, just adds to the shittiness :( To top it off....the fit of the rear bumper and the uprights that finish off the rear of the fins(the tail light caps) is so unbelievably poor, that nothing lines up, even after multiple attempts of shaving and sanding!!!

Seriously, I worked so hard on this kit doing things ive never attempted before, only to have it turn into a total piece of crap that im beyond upset with......I stopped modelling for 3 years because things sucked the life out of me, and this kit is going to do it again!!

I this goes down in my book as one of the most terribly molded kits I have ever bought, the 69 camaro 1/12 was not the greatest, but came out with no problems, the 67 corvette was a peach to build.....the one, my god, who the hell designed the molds, and who was in charge of quality control in the chroming area?

Unless you are a masochist, or love a challenge as hellish as an SAS training course...do NOT ever buy this kit!!

Hang in there man! You did all the other great work on this thing, you can fix some chrome for sure. Stick with it.

I get down on myself because the greats on the forums make it look too easy.

Im trying....man, its like....uuggghhh!!!!

This is the same kind of thing that happens with Italeri truck models, the sub assemblies go together perfectly and the detail is awesome, then you go to put it all together and NOTHING fits!!

If I can find it in myself, I will go take pictures of the bad gaps and such.im almost contemplating maybe sanding and filling and then trying to go over all the chrome trim and bumpers with a different color of paint, like maybe charcoal?

Just to update....between still trying to find a job(and running out of money)and the issues with this kit, Ive shelved it for now. I'm going to work on something else for a while and try and come back to this one later, its just left a bad taste in my mouth....and if it wasn't for all the work I've put into it....It would be getting a 2nd(and extremely short)life as a rifle target.
