I have a 1993 Caprice that was running great. The engine purred. We hD it sitting over the winter not driving it at all. Now when we go to drive it there is noise. It purs when you are just coasting, but when you put your foot on the gas there is a loud noise. This noise was not there before we let it sit. What can I do to quiet the engine again?

loud noise is not much help.
where is the noise coming from engine ? what does the noise sound like ?
metal/exhaust/ rattle etc....
before you put away for the winter did you use fuel stabilizer ?
check for rodents also.

Ok, I did check for rodents, none were found. I did not use a fuel Stabilizer before I put it away for the winter.
The noise, I can't explain. I'd say it's an exhaust noise. It sounds like the engine is choking when you put your fut on the gas. The minute you take your foot off the gas, the noise stops.

check the exhaust manifold flanges. also the converter mount/flanges
these rust and get soft causing a loose fit . at idle not much pressure but with rpm increase it will make noise.
could also be internal muffler baffles or the heat shields at the converter / muffler area.
