Rear Passenger Door External Handle

We have an 03 Ford Focus. We've had issues with the driver side rear door handle not wanting to open the door. A few days ago my daughter went to open the door and the latch broke. It will not open the door and no longer feels "spring loaded".

Is this a matter of a linkage coming disconnected or do I need to replace the whole assembly?
