2001 Ford Escape 2wd V6, check engine light came on and i check to see wat it was, and this code came up on my scanner P1409. From looking into my book i have several things that can cause this, how do i know what its causing this code to appear, EGR valve? EGR vacuum? EGR system sensor? without spending to much money.

Search for catalytic converter in this Escape forum. Your main cat is probably plugged by the insides of one of the 2 small ones (junk) that are part of the exhaust manifolds. This causes tremendous exhaust pressure to go up the EGR tube. On my 02 it actually caused the EGR to explode! Disconnect that tube from the EGR and see how much pressure is coming through.

Make sure your EVR is plugged in. The EVR control solenoid is located on the back of the intake manifold closest to the driver side, its a small piece of black plastic with a circle shaped top. There is 2 vacuum lines that plug into it and a wiring harness, make sure the harness insulation isnt falling apart, make sure your vacuum lines are plugged in and not broken at any point.
