97 contour trans slip code...

A guy I know has a 97 contour with the big v 6. He just got the tranny changed out with a scrap yard low mile tranny last year. Recently he keeps getting a code for tranny slippage. It's not noticeable but since we are in NY with its computer smog check it poses a problem. I spoke with another guy who is a very good mechanic of decades and does inspections about it. He said he had a similar car a while back and had to sell it because even he could'nt make it pass as it wouldn't go through all the speed, time .duration cycles needed. If he couldn't do it I doubt no one could. He said it basically made the car shift like they did for decades before lockups and was essentially fine except for a minute drop in mileage and the damned inspection. Something about the splines in the lockup portion of the torque converter. OK so back to my buddy with the problem contour now. Is there any simple changeout electronic controls that would be worth looking into that could fix this? Of course being an old car pulling the tranny is a deal breaker although the car is in damned nice shape with no rust at all???????

P 1744. He just told me he drove it a couple hundred miles with the OD off and the light hasn't come back on yet.

I'd start with replacing the TSS.

Yup. The tss could very well have something to do witth it. Hes goong to get it inspected this week while the light is off and buy another yearof use at least. He has been getting only about 22mpg out of it with mostly. Highway driving which sounds. Low to me for that size car.

Definitely low. I get 26 MPG in my 2.5L Contour. My 3.0L V6 in my old Contour got 29-30 MPG.
