300 TDT Exhaust mods

Has anyone removed the large rear mounted muffler from the 300TD?
I did this to my old 6.5TD truck and gained almost 2 mpg with little noise increase.
An "expert" told me there isn't any difference in the Benz.

comments/info would be appreciated.
