A/C Compresser Noise

I've read a few threads in this forum about similar conditions but did not find my exact scenario. I've got a 2000 Regal GS 3800 SC w/160K+ miles.

The other day the compressor suddenly began making a moderatly loud ticking noise. I know it is the compressor because the noise is only present when the a/c kicks on. When it kicks off the noise stops.

I also noticed, that when the compressor kicks off that it does not come to a complete and abrupt stop. It seems to stop, then for a second or so, skips/rotates forward once or twice about 1/16th of a turn. I've never looked to notice if this is normal operation or a sign of something going bad in the clutch. From above, visually I see nothing wrong with the compressor clutch.

I've been living without the a/c for a few days, but need to get it resolved. Is this pretty much a slam dunk that the compressor's clutch assembly or it's bearing needs to be replaced? How difficult is this job and are there special tools needed beyond regular pullers? Any links to this procedure? Thanks to all who can help.

Check the air gap between the pulley and clutch plate--it is probably near zero-- should be .020" . I'd say the clutch is too close due to corrosion behind the rivet head stops that don't allow it to retract fully- and it is rubbing when not engaged-- look for iron filings clinging to front of clutch to confirm rubbing- or use your feeler gauge to check air gap. The air gap can be adjusted by "borrowing" the tool from Autozone. Very common problem on V-5 compressors.

But what about the noise? It makes a ticking noise when the a/c is on or engaged. There is no problem when the clutch is disengaged. As far as the skipping forward of the clutch, I mentioned above, then yes I can agree that the air gap is minimal and could use adjustment, but this doesn't answer my question about the clutch bearing or it's replacement. Anyone else have any input?

Start savin up for a compressor,drier and O tube. She's gonna take a dump!

All I've not replaced the compressor yet, but will say I'm more convinced that it is just a bad compressor. I've been reluctant to use the AC since it started making noise and after a few weeks since it began it's grown louder and more severe when the compressor is engaged. Just wanted to ask a couple of other questions. Based off the the video does anyone think it may be something other than a failing compressor (like low refrigerant or refrigerant oil)? I ruled these possibilities out because the knocking has become so severe. Keep in mind the system still cools just fine.

Assuming it's a failing compressor, I know I need to replace the o-tube, dryer, and compressor. Any tips on how to do the flushing process? Anything else I better not forget? How much refrigerant and refrigerant oil should I add to the system on the recharge for this vehicle?

compressor has internal issues- like a broken reed valve or even a connecting rod- you will need to change it out..
