So I saw a great picture of a Ferrari California and got the bug to build one. As fate would have it, I was at Walmart and saw a Ferrari California on clearance after Christmas. You know I had to buy it.

http://images51.fotki.com/v303/photos/8/1044538/10309978/DSC_18361-vi.jpg

Just like the inspiration, this will have the ADV.1 wheels but, the paint will be black. Thanks to 124models.com readers for the color help! Interior will be Rosso Red leather with carbon fiber accents. My goal is to have this be the cleanest build ever. Two of my new focuses are scale, keeping wires etc. in proper scale, and sheen to make sure that the paint and finishes are as you see on the 1:1 car.

This car is something that I am using to perfect some skills for the Ferrari 250TR and the Shelby CSX2001.

Unveil is scheduled for the 2012 Birmingham Alabama show.

A trip to the Ferrari configurator on line helps me select all of the options to use for interior and exterior colors, finished, etc. The interior will be red with some carbon fiber accents.

http://images54.fotki.com/v627/photos/8/1044538/10370048/CalIntFinal1-vi.jpg

The exterior is black which I think should go nicely with the interior.

http://images107.fotki.com/v71/photos/8/1044538/10370048/Black-vi.jpg

I am using the KA Models PE kit. With the focus on scale, a lot of these pieces are going to have to be scratch built instead. I am excited about the brakes and the air vents as well as the seatbelt hardware and some the of the engine dress ups.

http://images36.fotki.com/v1134/photos/8/1044538/10370048/DSC01444-vi.jpg

I made a body kit to be subtle yet try to add some masculinity to the car. It is hard to believe, but the body has about 6 hours of clean up at this point where I was rescribing door and panel lines, filling the minimal sink holes, mold lines and making the car crisper and cleaner. I was going to open the doors and trunk, but realized I was getting in too deep. I really think those ADV deep concave wheels are going to make this thing look great. (Teaser: I am converting some FXX wheels into 21" deep concave for my 458 that I got at an ACME meeting last month)

http://images56.fotki.com/v371/photos/8/1044538/10370048/DSC01414-vi.jpg

Since this is a drop top, the interior has to be 110% top notch.

The dash is two pieces and having a hard time fitting together thanks to some air vents. You can see it all looks a little sloppy.

http://images109.fotki.com/v785/photos/8/1044538/10370048/DSC01460Large-vi.jpg

I am going to rebuild the vents so I can ensure they fit tight. They will also be floating, not connected to the lower part of the dash, which will help things fit better. you can see the styrene that I have shaped as a mock up on the vent on the far right. Now that this fits, I know I can safely cut off the stock vents.

http://images51.fotki.com/v102/photos/8/1044538/10370048/DSC01462Large-vi.jpg

Stock vents are gone. You can see things want to fit better already.
I have also gotten rid of those huge out of scale stitching indention that Revell had in the dash.

http://images51.fotki.com/v299/photos/8/1044538/10370048/DSC01464Large-vi.jpg

Now it is glued together. Look how much better it all fits together now. I am going to be using the radio from the KA kit, so that radio is about to go.

http://images51.fotki.com/v303/photos/8/1044538/10370048/DSC01473-vi.jpg

Doors are getting their pockets rebuilt and the tweeters got drilled out and replaced with some round styrene that I shaped to have a concave nature. The purpose of the tweeter adjustment was to reduce the gap on the stock tweets which was too large and out of scale. The drivers side door will have a scratch built mirror adjustment panel.

http://images59.fotki.com/v791/photos/8/1044538/10370048/DSC01445Large-vi.jpg

The seats have been cleaned up and have seams scribed in them. I cant wait to see these suckers in red. I have mixed a darker red custom paint that I have decided will work for the interior. Some shading is going to be used with some underlay tricks with white and gray primer to add depth the interior. Look for the PE painted prancing horse trick I picked up from Dave T (daveyracer) on the seats in the front and the back.

http://images61.fotki.com/v219/photos/8/1044538/10370048/DSC01446Large-vi.jpg

In order to fill some join lines and replicate the real car, I have had to cut apart the interior pieces and put them together a little differently. This is a pain, but will be worth it in the end.

http://images16.fotki.com/v383/photos/8/1044538/10370048/DSC01450Large-vi.jpg

The car has since been painted black and cleared and is being colorsanded now. I will have some pics up tonight of the color and I am warning you, get ready for some shine!!!!!!

Here are some pics of the car with the clear and buffed.

Today's ACME meeting was bring something to work on (modelpalooza) so I spent some time on this and my son Andrew and I worked on a 1970 Mustang Boss 302 diecast.

There are some areas which need to be hit again with the sandpaper and then buffed through the grits again. Kind of disappointing, but I want this one to be dead on perfect. I want to be able to say there are absolutely no imperfections in the paint. I am not there yet.

Thank you guys.

Rallymaster, I am a little worried about the red interior as sometimes I try to do too much and it comes out looking a little weird. After seeing the pics from the configurator, it gives me a little more confidence this could turn out okay.

Here are pics of the even more polished body. There is still work to do!!!!!!! Man. I got some sunlight/daylight florescents in my workbench and they show everything. The great thing is, if you can make it look good under these lights, it looks really good when you display the car elsewhere. It looks great in my kitchen and then depressing under these lights.

It is time to progress elsewhere and come back before I mess something up.
I think it is back to the red interior after this. The dash specifically and then I want to hit the interior with some color.

Thank you all again for the kind words!

Well, I spent all morning shooting the red interior and it looks terrible. The paint didn't cover well at all and it is very inconsistent with color, some very dark red and some light red/pink. Maybe I should have primed it with grey vs white. Regardless, it is getting a purple power bath right now and I am going to start on the engine while I get my head feeling a little better about this thing. We have all been through it, but I am totally bummed right now. It may be getting tan leather. We will see. Damn.

What red were you using?

Don't give up! It probably didn't need to be stripped!

Testors bottled lacquer "Chevrolet Engine Red", Mr. Hobby bottled red (and they have darker) should mix up easily and cover easily.

Hey Bob, it is the Testors MM Stop Light Red Lacquer mixed with Testors MM Black Lacquer (which isnt getting touched by Purple Power). I have started wetsanding it with some 2500 to try to level it out and recover it. I may throw an enamel on top of it cause this original stuff isnt covering at all. I sprayed it about 6:00am in my garage which was maybe 40 degrees which might have caused a problem too. Not sure. I started with some mist coats and then the wet coat simply wouldnt lay down consistently. I think some enamel is on the docket. I kind of lost faith in this current paint on the interior.

Could very well be the temperature. It's going to be back in the 60's by Wed.

There's a dark red Testors lacquer spray can, can't remember the name offhand, might think about shooting that color to make it uniform, then airbrush over that.

91% or 99% alcohol to strip hobby lacquers. But use that as a last resort. Your paint should be covering. Could be you thinned it too much, necessary to flow at low temperature, and resulting in blotchy color.

Thanks Bob.
I have sanded some pieces, they are looking better.
I am going to mist those pieces with the Stop Light Red and then I found some Boyd Red enamel in my stash that I think I will make it look good. It will all get a misting of a semigloss clear (about 65/35 flat to semigloss) so I think this should work.....

The seats and doors have the carbon fiber which has been cleared with the 2k and I have to say it looks pretty good with the red.

This is where you guys who make it look so easy get me in trouble!!!!!!!!!

The red is called "Flame Red" and it covers really well, at least out of the spray can.

Awesome black paint finish it seems flawless!

You gave me great Ideas to improve the interior door panels, I'm also building a California.

If you apply the red over a flat brown base you get a nice shadow of interior red.

I want to see those interiors, and how did you solve the AC vents...

Very nice job so far, keep it coming!

Thank you all, thank you Ramon.

Ramon, you're right about the red and a darker base. I discovered this when painting a room in our house years back. We painted it red and primed in white... big mistake. Later I found out we should have primed it in grey. When I was testing colors and paint for the Calil interior, I noticed when primed in gray, it was a nice rich/dark red and when primed in white, it was lighter and robust. This made me think that coating the interior in white primer, hitting it with a mist coat of grey primer, concentrating on the lines of the seats, doors, etc. and then lightly sanding the grey primer back to white which will leave gray primer in the crevices would lead to a nice shading effect when the final red is sprayed as the final color coat. I am on attempt #2 on the interior now, so I will let you all know how it goes. I will pull it off (psyching myself up here :lol2:)....

The AC vents will be easy, they are all done and just need to be cleared and assembled, but I have to get the darn red right first!!!! I will post some pics of a how to on that one. You will be able to pull it off with ease based on your ability.

...and for the black... I just shot another coat of clear to be smoothed out. This car has to be perfect and there were some issues with overspray crystallizing on the trunk which caused some impurities when sanded and buffed. I want to say that one may think the paint may be getting too thick with multiple coats, but they are all being flattened and buffed. I promise it will all be PERFECT. :grinyes: I will let Bob Downie be the final judge when he sees the finished product at our next ACME meeting... That's right, I am calling myself out on this one. Mike Lawrence too, if he is at the meeting (with his custom built carbon fiber water cooled computer).

Anyway, enough of a pictureless update.
Back to the bench with some pics tomorrow.

Alright, the interior killed me on this, but I have been working on it and got around to taking some pictures this morning.

I had to repaint it THREE TIMES! What a great learning experience. The interior is a little beat up as a result.

SUEDE IT - I used Suede It to make a texture for the speaker grills. It also created the darker look for those grills as the Seude It is a dark green. I think this gives a nice look vs hitting everything with the same color/shade/texture.

MIRROR ADJUSTMENT - You can also see I added the mirror adjustment knob on the drivers side door.

FUTURE - Some of that carbon fiber is going to get a coat of future to give it a gloss. I am not going to both sections of CF the same as I want that variety to add depth.

http://images15.fotki.com/v587/photos/8/1044538/10370048/y10-vi.jpg

Here is a little more backed up view. I like the varying tones of red. If it were all the same tone and the same sheen I think it would look a little too consistent and not realistic. I have to say though, I did not mean for them to be this varied as they look slightly too much but with how much this thing is giving me trouble, I will take what I can get.

http://images16.fotki.com/v383/photos/8/1044538/10370048/y10Large-vi.jpg

EMBOSSING POWDER - My wife picked this up for me at Hobby Lobby and I think it did a great job for the carpet!

http://images27.fotki.com/v991/photos/8/1044538/10370048/y8Large-vi.jpg

A little more of the carpet. I think when this is all put together the reds will tone down and blend together a little more. Maybe I am pushing it too far with this red.

http://images33.fotki.com/v1068/photos/8/1044538/10370048/y3Large-vi.jpg

IN SCALE - A few months ago, I picked up some digital calipers at HobbyTown. This is part of my quest for understanding scale.

http://images17.fotki.com/v523/photos/8/1044538/10370048/y2Large-vi.jpg

WIDER TIRES! So, keeping things in scale, I am splitting the rear tires to make them WIDE and fit the rim. These rims scale out to 13.5 wide in the back so they are getting 345 tires.

http://images41.fotki.com/v1245/photos/8/1044538/10370048/y-vi.jpg

SEATS - I added the straps on the seats with yellow Tamiya tape. There is a PE button at the top of the tape to simulate the snap on the real car.

SEAMS IN THE SEATS - seams were added to the seats. I will be working on a way to make these more consistent as well. My exacto wanted to walk all over the place and not in a straight line when I was getting these suckers in there. I love the way the seams look.

I need to add CF to the back of the seat (for the 2rd time) which is a pain!

SEAT ADJUSTMENT KNOBS - I shaved the knobs off the seats so I can add my own after paint. That way I can get more crisp and accurate controls on there vs the Revell supplied. You wont be able to see them and at this point I may pass over this step.

http://images50.fotki.com/v1558/photos/8/1044538/10370048/y4Large-vi.jpg

KEY HOLE - the body got a key hole added in there. I drilled a small hole and then set a PE screw in there to simulate a key hole.

http://images36.fotki.com/v1204/photos/8/1044538/10370048/y5Large-vi.jpg

SUPER GLUE DOWN THE DOOR - :runaround: - then I dripped super glue down the door while trying to add the passenger mirror. What a terrible, sloppy, careless mistake!!!!

I think getting rid of the seams on this dashboard was a great idea. From Revell they are WAY too big and look gaudy.

http://images42.fotki.com/v1376/photos/8/1044538/10370048/y11-vi.jpg

The photoetch grill adds a lot to the front of this car. I don't think you can build this kit without adding a PE grill.

http://images60.fotki.com/v361/photos/8/1044538/10370048/y12-vi.jpg

Here is another view of the drivers door. You can see how it is beat up from the many mess ups with my darn paint issues.

Progress has continued on the California!

The steering wheel was done with carbon fiber brushed with some clear lacquer and the red enamel covered with a light spray of lacquer flat clear.
The start button is a PE bolt turned upside down and airbrushed gloss red. I wanted an even thin coat of paint so I used the airbrush and I wanted a perfect circle so I used the PE bolt. I don't trust myself to make a properly sized and perfectly round "button" with paint. The toggle switch on the right controls transmission response. I made this with a piece of red electrical tape cut very small. Again, I did not trust myself to replicate this properly with paint. The thickness of the tape made for a perfect in scale switch. The other colors around the switch were done with an exacto and thinned enamel and they came out poorly (round blobs).

http://images43.fotki.com/v398/photos/8/1044538/10370048/20120325IX-vi.jpg

I am happy with the dashboard after I removed the gaudy seams around the glovebox and corrected the AC vents that originally had the giant spaces in them. The buttons on the dash are painted PE bolts again to make sure they are round.

http://images108.fotki.com/v613/photos/8/1044538/10370048/20120325I-vi.jpg

The seats are starting to look more at home.
I made the leather straps on the seats with some yellow Tamiya tape and a PE button. I will have to get a better picture of those.
Center console, you guessed it, more PE buttons.
All the different shades of red are starting to come together a lot better than I had anticipated.

http://images50.fotki.com/v1558/photos/8/1044538/10370048/20120325X-vi.jpg

Before paint, I filled the seams around the hood to make them thinner/tighter for a more realistic look. It paid off as those gaps are TIGHT!
(((Yes, this has an engine, No I have not started on it...)))
I drilled out the headlights and used the ol' stretched sprue trick topped off with some tamiya clear blue acrylic paint.
Still debating on that larger horse.

http://images58.fotki.com/v449/photos/8/1044538/10370048/20120325IV-vi.jpg

The rear has blacked out lights.
I used clear Tamiya red and smoke to paint the insides of the lenses to give a good effect.
The factory exhaust is used with some Alclad heating techniques.
The grills on the exhaust did not fit worth a darn. If you use the KA kit, you will have to modify the exhaust some.
I think the darker color of the exhaust gives this a little more sinister look for the too nice attitude of the California.

http://images58.fotki.com/v612/photos/8/1044538/10370048/20120325II-vi.jpg

It is coming around and that interior that gave me a hard time will soon be looking a lot better.

That's a really lovely job. I think the shades of red really make the interior look realistic. I'm sure in the 1:1 there isn't much variation, but I think in scale you need to exaggerate slightly so that it doesn't look like a toy -- it's the impression it gives that matters. The dash is superb, and the body looks like a million dollars. Can't wait to see it come together -- I think the Cali is a rather underrated Ferrari.

all the best,
Matt

Thank you guys! Kris, we tend to like the same style of cars. That is nice to hear coming from you.

Matt, I think you are spot on with your thoughts. Thank you!

I have a little clean up to do with the interior, but for the most part it is done!

I saw this one coming.... I think the wheels are too small. Especially the rear ones. Now I am going to have to get some designed and 3D printed fast to get this done and make room for my Atlanta Shelby Cobra CSX2001.

I think this is my opportunity to make some wheels like the stock ones, but in 21 front and 22 rear, deep concave in the rear, so they will have a clean but modified look.

These rear wheels fill the space very nicely.

I will use this design however.

Looks very good! Great detail with the stitches! What did you men with "the ol' stretched sprue trick " when you where talking about your lights?

I personally think the wheels don't look bad, i would use them. Nice progress, the interior looks sweet along with the paint.

Hobby Design do do those ADV 5.1 wheels, Ive recently got a set & they are fabulous! But they are 20inch which might still be a little too small... cant believe 20inch wheels are becoming too small these days! Whateva happened to 18s...
Stunning work on the interior, great idea with the PE buttons!

Thank you guys!

GvEman, I will try to find some reference of this Stretched Sprue concept. Basically, you take some clear sprue, heat it, stretch it to achieve your desired thickness, and then heat the end again to yield a nice convex bulb which is convincing for the look of the xenon headlights. I will find you something better than that description though.

The wheel is taking a long time because it has so many dimensions. In the meantime, I made some larger rotors. I might change the hole pattern to match the California and remove the slots. Eventually, I will have many variations that I might throw on (a certain internet auction site).

The engine is coming along. I had to cut apart the intake manifold to make the throttle bodies. I did not want to do this, but the ones on the kit were terrible looking. They weren't going to pass.

http://images18.fotki.com/v437/photos/8/1044538/10370048/DSC02102-vi.jpg

I added an oil dipsitck which I thought would be a nice touch.

This thing needs to be getting done fast as I have 4 weeks to get the CSX2001 done for our ACME show in Atlanta.

Thanks again for the nice words!

The body and chassis are now put together. You can see those wheels really are too small. You say it looks like a 4x4 now, but if I lower it to close the gaps in the wheels, it looks like a lowrider, so the bigger wheels are a necessity and really the only answer.

I cant tell if the seats are too low. I think it makes things look a little out of scale.

http://images52.fotki.com/v304/photos/8/1044538/10370048/y4-vi.jpg

If the chassis and body are together, that means the engine is in there!!!! There are some small additions to still be made, but this is it for the most part.

I tried to plumb it as reasonably as possible without getting gaudy. I need to tone down the braided line between the two intakes, it is a little bright and distracting. There will also be some aluminum filler caps added to each side of the engine to add a little more depth and contrast.

You can see the scratch built hood latch I made with spare photoetch and some aluminum sheet.

The white and blue filler caps in the upper right of the picture were turned on my Dremel with some clear sprue and then painted. I find that the clear has a little better consistency for being turned and a higher melting point than the white styrene.

The reds are all different reds. Some Tamita flat red, some testors model master red with a clear flat lacquer, and a combination of the two. The varying colors tends to give more depth as well.

http://images46.fotki.com/v374/photos/8/1044538/10370048/y-vi.jpg

As I write this, the angles of the airboxes are being adjusted as they tend to tilt in a little too much after the pieces were disassembled for the scratch built throttle bodies.

You also get a little better view of the hood release.

Just a few slight additions and then it is wait for the wheels to get printed.

I dont know.. i have been trying to look at pictures of the California and they look decent. because the seats are very low positioned in the car.
The wheels definitely look to small. But your wheels look way better than the revell ones, but hey.. any thing does that ;)
Its sick how big wheels you need on modern cars!

Btw: i love the hood locking mechanism!

Hey Ashman,

I am going to make my own wheels on CAD and 3D printing. Here is a draft that is going to have to be redone with a different approach to keep everything symmetrical. I was trying to cheat and copy and paste then rotate one piece five times, but cheaters never win.

It will be the stock Ferrari shape, but be 21 and 22 inches. Instead of the stock concaveness, it will follow the ADV.1 style with concave in the front and deep concave in the rear. So it will kind of be stock modified. If I can get it right, I will cast it and distribute it to those interested. I want to try my hand at other designs too. This one is a tough design because of its many dimensions. There is not too easy a way to mock it up.

Great Idea! Ive been wanting to try my hand at CAD drawing up parts & getting them 3D printed.
www.shapeways.com (http://www.shapeways.com) seem to be a pretty good 3D printer.
Oh keep in mind that 21" wheels arnt actually 21" in total diameter too!

Cant wait to see them!

Thanks Ashman,

Here is the rear wheel, 22 inch deep concave. The front is a 21" inch with a less concave face. Ferrari design, but larger and more concave. Yes, the rim is larger than 22" on the outside, good call on that.

Here are some CAD seatbelts that I am going to get printed and then cast in resin, I will cast a lot of theses for future models.

Mark, I hope to make some extra seatbelts for sale (cheap) to get out to those who want them.

Brian, I just started the real work on the Cobra yesterday. I needs to be finished in 12 days! I will have some pics up ASAP. Thank you for remembering that one!

The California has to be wrapped up in 12 days as well.
Thank you all!
